TURKISH MASTIFF Type(painting 1659/1660)

In the year 1659/1660 the rich Dutch Aristocrat named Jacob Schimmelpenninck van der Oye made a long yourney in Turkey. The Dutch Painter Dirck van Loonen was with him together and painted Jacob in an old Turkish/Osmanic clothes. This Painting is maid in Turkey. You can see an old Turkish Mastiff type Dog. So far as i know the man on the left site is Jacob.
In those time the paintings where not so precisely like a photograph.

Impressive painting. Despite whatever artistic licence the large mastiff type depicted can't be too removed from reality. At the very least this dog is a large, fairly short coated molosser, parti-coloured type. How short the coat is, is debatable, short and smooth or short and thick? Overall this dog looks close to the modern Anatolian mastiff or other contemporary large flock guardians from Turkey. Its interesting that there is detectable dewlap and that the muzzle is on the short side.

The man on the picture (right site) must be Jacob Schimmelpenninck van der Oye the painter is Dirck van Loonen. In the Turkish/Osmanic archives maby there shall be Turkish paintings of old dogs i shall try to ask some friends in Turkey to investigate.(i hope it is possible and that they can find someting)..Philippe I shall look for jou usually this is in color but i made a picture of the painting news/newspaper. I knew where you can see it but i cant find the site anymore...
(Official) in Turkey they say Turk(ish) Mastiff instead of Anatolian Mastiff....we say Turk coban kopekleri instead of Anatolian shepherd dog.

There is a very interesting anachronism about this painting. Dirk van Loonen the painter ( Dutch, b. 1619 ) and Jacob Schimmelpenninck van der Oye could NOT have been contemporaries as they were separated by almost two centuries: Willem Anne Assueer Jacob Schimmelpenninck van der Oye was born in 1834.
