Exercise and training are crucial for all breeds, really. Training is an important part of keeping a dog from becoming aggressive with the one you already own. ANY dog can be dog aggressive. Staffs, Bull Terriers, OEBS, any larger dog, should NOT be confined to a yard and have that considered 'exercise'. You can own any type of dog in any type of housing, as long as you give it the neccessary exercise; Putting your dog in the yard for a half hour is not enough. If you cant devote at least two hours a day to either walking, jogging, biking, and vigorous play with your dog, then I certainly wouldn't reccomend getting any of those breeds. Some dogs naturally need less exercise, but all need some. Are you looking for a strong dog because you have researched specific breeds and they seem like an ideal match for you, or do you want an intimidating dog in your yard? Most dogs have guarding instincts; keep in mind that these instincts vary. Pyrs have a cool reaction to strangers; Filas react with the ojeriza theyre known for. I won't judge or assume, but it sounds a bit like you didn't thouroughly research the breeds you are showing interest in. Most of the dogs you mentioned have a tendancy to be dog aggressive, and most Presas, Dogos, and OEBs are far from calm for a point in their lives, usually when they get to be big enough to cause some damage bouncing around (usually begins sometime between 8 to 18 months of age, the duration varying from dog to dog, sometimes indefinite). With ANY of these breeds, you must be without question Alpha. No way around it. Bad things happen to these breeds when people take them on without knowing fully what comes with owning them. Many of these dogs can and will dominate a weak owner. All the walks and obedience training in the world wont make a dog work for you if it doesnt respect you. These breeds are not for everyone; I'm certainly not saying that they aren't for you, but PLEASE make sure to thoroughly research all the breeds you are showing interest in before deciding to purchase one. I hope this doesn't sound confrontational, this is just a subject I have alot of thoughts on.

    • i've been looking for the right breed for me, a strong dog, calm dog, with good guarding instincts, that could live with a medium sized yard, or even in an apartment. I' ve a male boston terrier, and i'm interested in a female, and the female can't be aggresive with my boston terrier. My firsts options were a presa, a dogo argentino or a boerboel, but i know that these breeds are very big and need a lot of exercise and training, and i am not so sure if i can give all that time for the exercise and the obedience training that is crucial for breeds like these. So, for that reason i can add to the list the amstaff, the old english bulldogge or the bull terrier. Really i want to buy a dog that is protective and calm, not hyperactive (as the malinois or the aussie cattle dog), and that is not so confrontatinal with other dogs.

        • Ditto on HReno. I just want to add, the AmStaff, OEB, and Bull Terrier are not calm dogs. Not only do they have the dendancy to be dog aggressive, they are natural athletes and have a lot of drive. I'm not saying don't get one, but if you do, work with the dog a lot. As HReno highlighted on, your commitment level will make or break your new dogs behavior.
