Not a German breed at all, the German Beagle is actually a relatively young American creation. Developed by crossing the German Shorthaired Pointer with the Beagle, this is a moderately popular hunting dog in the United States, posessing reliable drive and even temperament. The German Beagle is an intelligent and obedient working dog, making an agreable family companion. Playful and energetic, it needs reasonable excercise.

The coat is short, dense and flat, coming in typical "hound" colourings, including brown-ticked and tricolour shades. Average height is around 17 inches.
