Your post captured a lot of historical and current day beliefs about your breed the Great Dane. You are neither wrong nor right on this it is just the observation of a conscious and learned owner. My take is that you know your dogs and know their history and current status so you are able to adapt to the situation like with the boar getting ready to charge. You did the right thing.

Some of us think that because breed is historically capable of doing something it means the our "dog" of whatever breed can do the same thing. This is not correct as they may have lost the drive or had it trained out of them.

There are working Great Danes in Texas working with Dogo Argentino and other bullies catching pigs or chasing them to bay. All breads have fear in them and that is what makes them defensive, prey drive, or coach potatoes.
