so there was some ghetto ass black guy sneaking around my yard the other day. who knows what the guy was up too, stealing or possibly worse. my wife was home alone and scared. I have my dogs on chains when I am not home. she let 1 go and than the other, and than the other, my female was let go first and she chased the bastard down and almost caught him, i guess the guy made it over the fence just in time, but he had some trouble as my fence is chainlink with 3 rows of barbwire, yard is about 2 acres so the guy had a decent head start to get away but she almost got his foot on the fence, by the time my other dogs were let go and made it there, he was already over. anyways i never trained my dogs for any sort of protection or guarding work etc. My dogs were able to read the situation and act appropriately. my female did most of the work as she was let go first, and this is a dog that had an FHO surgery on her R rear leg, and a acl surgery on her L rear leg. she was trying to climb the fence to go after him. this same dog also stopped a guy from trying to rob us about 5 yrs ago as well at a jack in the box drive through. anyways im proud of my dogs for doing a good job, for the most part dogs are used more as a deterrent than anything, and i always wondered if my dogs would just jump around and bark at an intruder or actually bite. i asked my wife and she said that she has no doubt the dogs would have bitten him if they caught him.

dude where do you live, lol. Also do you have a gun? Sounds like you may but if not get a few and you and your wife can go shooting for practice to get your skills in order. Dogs are great but you must rely on yourself in those situation first and foremost. I think of dogs as one line of defense of many. Dog, Alarm, Weapons (knife, Gun), close quarter combat.
I think any dog could possibly bite an intruder, the trick is finding out if the dog will continue to pursue the attack if the intruder strikes it. A chihuahua will bite but doesn't mean it will keep doing so after a blow.
I am with Workman on this. Arm yourself and become proficient with your weapon of choice. Dogs are alarms - you are the protector.
Some dogs will do a great job as deterent or protector but don't leave it up to them alone. I am normally armed even when I am lounging around watching TV or typing on MD like now, and I have three Caucasians on the prowl. The two rifles are also loaded and within easy reach.
My dogs have chased people off in Virginia - one guy jumped my fence from the back and then did a hasty retreat when confronted by 4 Caucasians (on his exit the literally did not even touch the fence when he went back over - he had motivation) - and an armed home owner.

well given the guy had a very large head start and saw the dog released and was still a close distance to the gate, even a greyhound wouldnt have caught him. also the dog released has had surgery on both her hind legs. torn acl and FHO do you even know what those surgeries are? if you do great, if not look it up and educate yourself. Both her hind legs are weak. you must not have read the entire post which doesnt surprise me.
as for davidfitness comment there is only 1 way to find out if your dog will continue to attack after being struck.

Good advice - but...
A dog that may have a good bit on a decoy while playing a game may curr when it comes to a real confrontation. For home security you probably want to get a dog that has a propensity to engage an intruder as a part of their natural makeup. Any of the guardian breeds should have this disposition in their inventory. Some have more of it so there is a balance of the level of protection needed and the ability to get along with others.

I forgot to mention that since we moved to the new place in Texas - none of the dogs or cats are allowed in the house.. One dog stays in the back part of the property with the sheep and goats and the other two are around the house.

Don't think it's racist to note that black people can be pretty fast, it's definitely racist against american bullies to make fun of them for being slow though. Guilty as charged.

If dogs are not kept in the house, then they should have access to all windows and doors around the house, if you want them for security. Thieves can come in through skylights too if they want to get in bad enough.

While I appreciate the point you're trying to make, one thing needs to be cleared up. Affirmative action is/WAS an attempt to right SOME of the wrongs attributed to slavery. I also feel it's easy to say get thick skin if you are NOT living in that person's skin. My gf is also a school teacher, and just generally an extremely innocent goody two shoes (was dux of her school and never inhaled marijuana, is a strong christian, etc) to the point where sometimes it can make me, as a rebellious bad ass, a little sick, but unbelievably even she gets treated like she's going to steal something and gets talked down to like she's a potentially violent crazy animal, even by blatant scum of the earth white trash. There's millions of little things every day she has to put up with and it's disgraceful. Worst part is she just expects it and doesn't think anything of it.

my comment was correct. there was a black guy sneaking around my yard. my wife is asian, i am white. and the few friends that i still have from childhood are non white. where i was raised, I was the minority. I was the "whiteboy" so its not surprising that my friends and wife are non white.
any human of any race could have out ran my bullies. why? because they were released about an acre away, the guy saw them released and he was very close to the gate. a midget might not have made it in time, but if he was a black midget he would have just jumped the gate.

my female is about 70 lbs i would guess. i weighed her recently and she was 80 lbs but she has gotten fat, shes been inside most of the time and not getting much exercise as her leg is still healing from the acl surgery she had. should take about 6 months to fully recover.
she started showing a protective instinct around 1 year old. she is 5 years old now. If I bring someone into my yard she is fine. if i walk her in public etc. she is fine. if someone acts threatening though she will become aggressive. she isnt really very people aggressive, i think it was more of a protecting my territory type thing. although my dogs are more protective over my wife when I am not around. She is very animal aggressive though.
when my dogs are on the chain, i set them up to cover both front and back doors and 1 by the room.

EXCELLENT, I didn't think it was necessary either but didn't touch on it till American Bullies and the speed of blacks was brought up. Now it's good your dog did what we all probably hope ours will. theres lots of street people where i live. there is a wash directly on the other side of my fence. there are lots of homeless that set up permanent camps down there. people sleeping under the bridge on the other side of my fence etc.

I live in a decent area, in the Burb's of Michigan. We all have a little over an acre plot. But neighbors all the way around none the less. I own mastiffs in different forms, but this day all I had out was two. This is going back now a little over two years ago, I think. Fenice and Eragon two of my Neapolitan Mastiffs were out on the lot. My backyard consist of many trees and bushes, not to mention a big porch for them to lay on. Depending on the day I rotate dogs, some stay in and others out while I'm at work.
There is a rental house across the street, kitty corner to my property. The people over there at the time were drunks and to make matters worse, crack heads....Who (ofcourse) didn't work and lived off the government. My husband keeps a wide assortment of tools and heating equipment in our garage, also quads and dirt bikes....So more $$ out there then in the house-lol. Well now that I've laid the story line here goes;
I came home from work as any other day, went inside and started making food for the pack. When I opened my back door to let the two Neo's in and the others out I had a Shock. Fenice's eye WAS GONE! I started freaking OUT. Checking her over to make sure that her and her mate didn't get into it, nothing. Went outside into my garage and there was only little thin pieces of glass found in garage. But nothing out of place or moved. I called my vet and promptly loaded her up and had her checked out. Well apparantly I have never seen what a dog looks like with a "Black eye," lol....Because the eye itself was there..and it was swelling from a blunt trauma. I was sent home with eye drops.
After a few days I ran into the neighbor next door and mentioned to him about finding small pieces of glass in my garage and Fenice's eye. He had a funny look on his face when I told him the story, then he said, "Well I've noticed the people in the rental house coming and going recently from yours." These were NOT friends of mine, I have never spoken to them. Why would they be at my house?
Long story short what I think happened is they would come and either "borrow" or simply take what they needed, INCLUDING syphoning gas out of our truck (Grrrrr) took us a bit to figure that one out. But he must of went into the garage thinking the dogs were inside, and woke up a sleeping mastino...I think he popped her in the face with a flash light~Explains small amount of thin glass and eye~to get away from her biting him in the Ars' as he escaped. These people are gone now...But New Crack heads have been moved in, that now also run a whore house from it.

I'm training another one of my males for p.p. currently because of these poeple....Also thinking of having my decoy come over to do "home invasion" scenerio's...
We will see how long this next bunch makes it across the street.
But on another note we have more guns in our house then heart beats....lol....So should be good.
It's sorta Ridiculous to think of these people across the street living where they are, its a nice area with good people. Last week while hanging out next door to "Crack head house" (What the neighborhood calls it) with our other neighbors, we Actually found NEEDLES on the property line...

i agree with you, a human cannot out run a grey hound. that is common sense and not what i was saying.
if a person is a few feet from a fence, and sees any breed of dog released from far away much more than 20 yards. the person can hit the fence in time. the greyhound was used as an example. the point i was trying to make is because the dog was far away, and he was close to the fence. and he saw it released. it was pretty easy for him to get to the fence in time, but he did get hung up on it a bit cause its barbwired. lets not forget both the dogs hind legs are screwed up.
your story reminded me of something similar that happened to my male. not people breaking in, but getting injured from someone. I used to live in a more rural area and we had about 5 acres. People would ride horses around the niehgborhoods alot, lots of the roads were dirt roads. anyways I came home and there was a decent sized gash on my males head right between his eyes. well when people would walk by with their horses, the dogs would rush the fence and bark at them etc. so it turns out some guy was pissed my dogs were barking at him and his horse and pulled out his little horse whip thing and started whipping the fence. it must have slipped through and caught him in the face, im takling about right between the eyes. if that whip landed like an inch to the left or right it would have taken out his eye for sure.
