    • what breed/breeds do you think is the best property guardian? if you cant pick just one, name a couple of your top picks and why.
      • This topic has been beaten to death, I will say a hyper ankle biter will warn you if anyone is near your house at any time lol
        • i never engaged in this topic before im sure it has been gone over and than it got into long debates over this dog is better than that one cause of this and that, so ill change my request. you only get to pick one, just type the name of the breed and thats it, what breed is best in your opinion?
          • Cawkazn, there was a discussion about it at this http://molosserdogs.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?33906.0#post_33987 so check it out and see if it helps.
            • I wouldn't be looking at breeds, Id be more concerned with the individual dog. Also, you need to define what you mean by property guardian(like serious sentry dog, passive alarm dog who *may* engage etc...) A good Rottie, CO, Sar, GSD and various Mastiffs can all meet the requirements depending upon your demands. The safest I ever felt with a dog on my side was with a CO because I knew nothing was going to get around or through him without him making it regret doing so, and I don't think there was much out there he couldn't persuade not to push the issue.
              • Good point but since the breed somewhat defines the function it is better to start with a general set of parameters and work down to the individual dog. Doing it the other way is like finding the proverbial needle.
                • Sage koochee has pure guard instinct by birth this breed does not need any training and koochee dogs don't attack on the owners livestock atall [br][link={e_FILE}public/1321985143_11577_FT83801_1.jpg][img:width=500&height=374]{e_FILE}public/1321985143_11577_FT83801_1_.jpg">[/link][br]
                  • i checked out that thread, it was more aimed at guarding livestock from predators. I am speaking as guarding your property and home from humans. not an alarm dog, a dog that is going to turn some trespasser into fresh meat for dinner for the next month. not wanting the thread to turn into a "I fear this will turn ugly and become yet another "my dog can beat your dog and a pack of wolves with it" thread and God knows we've all had enough of such nonsense on this poor site already." just throw out your top pick, just name the breed thats it
                    • Caucasian Ovcharka, Central Asian Ovcharka, Sarplaninac. All are natural guardians.
                      • IF we are talking about a dog that should only warn the household and alarm of an intruder I will seriously stick to a chihuahua. I have never met a dog that made me think that it could be a good guarding, I mean to really know if it can guard or not it has to be through a real test in my opinion. I did have an experience with a chow chow puppy during Bernie's puppy social class that did not want to care at all to go near any strangers and she was off leash. She came and sniff the strangers and stayed close to her family, she also tried to Bully Bernie but that didn't work out too well. But in all my years of being around dogs, I have never seen a pup that young display such indifference to strangers. I am not talking about being shy or unstable, the dog just simply didn't have any interest in anyone beside his owner.

"But in all my years of being around dogs, I have never seen a pup that young display such indifference to strangers. I dont, but from what i have read about them they exhibit: traditionally known as Ojeriza, most often described as "hatred of strangers". I dont know how young that kicks in though either. whats your guys thought on the fila?

                              • I have three of them living in South Texas - San Antonio area. This past summer temps hit 122 degree F. I provided fan and shade and they were fine. Don't forget that the coat serve many purposes. They come alive in colder weather though.
                                • yeah its pretty weird weather here, really hot summers, and it will hit 32 degrees or a bit lower in the winter though.
