        • GENETIC LINE-BREEDING PROGRAM TO RECREATE THE OLDE BRAZILIAN BANDOGGE (FARM WORKER) The FCI, Filas Brasileiro and Bullmastiffs of today are a far cries from its ancestral the old Bandogges (before 1900’s). The booths modern-day breed may be a fine animal to own, but it has maintained nothing of the tenacity, speed, agility, guard and hunting drives were the definitive characteristics of the old Bandogges. The Old Filas from 1970’s has been selected focus in one of his drives “home guardian” for a serious Kennel Club in Brazil name CAFIB. Some farmers has been selected true type Filas (old types) for their own propose during several years and at this moment these bloodlines are rare and now were in homozygosis breeding program “narrow cross” too. The Redcapo’s Kennel since 1990 has breeding 3 bloodlines of APBT, stocks from Pat Patrick’s (Maloney’s, Indians and Burton’s) , from Old family red nose bloodlines (Redcapo’s Tara – imported from Florida, US) and White, black nose (Redcapo’s Ghost - UKC) registers, and a mix APBT x 6,24% Tosa Inu -Old Fighting Type (Ramon’s Smoke Jet - Bandog). So our APBT has a game drives with a lot of % of old and rare Colby’s dogs select for ultra-select dogman such as a Pat Patrick’s and a small % of Tosa. Redcapo’s interesting in mix Molossos with APBT began in 1990, crossing his first Tricross: APBT x Weimareiner x Filas and a Hybrid: APBT x Filas. After many generations we had some specific problems with two lines: First the Tricross with a Weimareiner seams to be not a perfect conformation and we try to dissolve his % to less than 2,5% and we produce a very well blood line (Redcapo’s Morgana – Tricross Bandog). Second the hybrid Fila x APBT were too aggressive…the “ojeriza” drive (CAFIB standard word) with strange people are very high in 90% of liters. I thought with my partner Fernando Xavier Chaves that were affectionate in breeding and training Filas CAFIB since 1980’s and we made a brain storm about what happened and about the future of our old Filas breeding program. At this time are triying to researched line breeding programs and I bought some books: Dr. Carl Semencic, The Word of Fighting Dogs, and a Book of my Professor in Agronomy, Aloizio Borem in plant breeding classes a book titled: " plant breeding”, covering traditional and biotechnological tools for plant breeding and was written by a supervision of Dr. Donald Rasmusson at the University of Minnesota, U.S. The Book gave to our knowledge “database” some finest info about the related breeding program but to different propose. The two rare breeds breeding program from this book of Dr. Carl Semincic we considered a very close philosophy of our breeding program, the Bandog by Dr. Swinford and a Olde Bulldogge by Mr. David Leavitt. We now looking forward to make a two different blood line: one hybrid, Classic Swinford Bandog ( Bullmastiff x APBT and the best stud dog from our cross Fila x APBT) and the other Cross with almost same foundation breeding of Old Bulldogge From Leavitt, but change the English Bulldog to Fila Brasileiro and the American Pit Bulldog to a Tosa, in a different mix percentage. We call the second cross a Tricross because our APBT that we are using at this time has less than 0,1 % of Tosa, so was a pure breed APBT. The Bullmastiff was choosing because that breed (old genes) seams to be a modern Bandog, better than a Swinford but with the FCI breeding problems. The Dogge de Bordeaux can do the same propose of a Bullmastiff but in these time we do not have good stock with convenient prices and type in Brazil. Our Philosophy based with a Borem advices in breeding, that has the idea that because all of breeds used, were the same “probably” ancestor (Bandog or Molossos- based at diagram written by Stratton’s in his book, The Word of APBT), will be appeared in a breeding program if we has the phenotype and characteristics in mind to select him, together with a narrow cross and back cross program. Today’s Redcapo’s Brazilian Old Bandogge the Foundation Stud Dogs During the last few years we have made several trips to the Minas Gerais State searching for typical Filas originating from the ancient breeding. We find two typical Filas Line breeding very similar to an ancestral Bandog Styles (The male Redcapo’s Leo and the female Redcapo’s Malhada). We introduce in 2004 this new line of Fila-CAFIB blood line , Redcapo’s Leo, owned by Fernando Xavier Chaves and with a particularly aggressive male (Ojeriza drive). The Origin The Fila Brasileiro are descendants of the 15th-century English Mastiff, Bloodhound, Bulldog and Rafeiros. From the Bloodhound, he inherited loose skin and keen sense of smell. The Bloodhound in its bloodlines gives it superb tracking ability. The Mastiff contributed compact body, courage and an ever-alert disposition. When the Fila finds its quarry it does not attack, but rather holds it at bay until the hunter arrives. The Bulldog added the unforgiving impetuous temperament. The Fila has the abilty to track and control livestock and large game. When slavery was legal in Brazil, the Fila was used return fugitives unharmed to their slave masters. The Filas great tracking ability led to its presents in North America and Europe. Due to its size and potential for aggression, it is unfairly banned in some countries. The Bullmastiff there we choose are a FCI Standard with hip dysplasia negative pedigrees (all 2 generation parents). It is a really nice Bullmastiff , Duron de Santa Rosalia that have some very rare genes selected since 1940’s in Europe Standard. This dog lost some drives in FCI conformation show during de 80’s.We search in the internet his ancestral and they look very different, more powerfully and probably with more old drives. His sons Bandogs: Redcapo’s Jack and Redcapo’s Dourada are Redcapo’s Kennel Olde Bandogge foundation. The APBT stud dog there we are choose in the modern generation of Bandog are Redcapo’s Tuia, this bitch has in his pedigree all the different blood line from our Pit bull Kennel from the beginning and a heavy back cross to Patrick’s Blood line such as Bolio and Gonzale’s No Regret and with a 0,1 % of Tosa Inu. Bandog old styles pictures of stud dogs that our Old Brazilian Bandogge Breeding Standard should like The first stud dog is a male Bullmastiff from 1900’s, this dog don’t have a modern Bulldog Classic Head (undershot style) and looks very aggressive and well balance and remember some APBT blood lines. Picture by Mr. W. Burton, of Thorneywood Kennels, Nottingham (was first blog by Barbara). The second stud dog is from o old picture probably painting at midlle of 1600’s from that I believed this ancestral from Brazilian Filas that are imported from England with the namely Dogge The Forte Race that should be a Bandog blood line. The picture shows a mix sound Mastiff 70% x 30 %Old Bulldog with almost 130 lb dog, the head is a classic Mastiff style with a Bullmastiff ears from today. The third stud dog was a Fila, from 1978 CAFIB Standard. This male dog was one of Filas foundation Blood line and has some white % like the Dogge The Forte Race old picture. We believed that this mix white and with some colors is from the Old Bulldog/Bandogs genes . We find some Filas with this white color in a Ranch that select Filas since 70’s just for a farm work with no registers. The last pictures are from “Modern Bandogs” from unknowing kennel’s that we found in the internet databases. The two dogs are looks like a mix Fila (70’s) x Bulmastiff (1900’s) , the body seams perfect (compact) and sounds healthy and powerfull dogs. Fila Brasileiro Drives written by CAFIB. "Ojeriza" to strangers: “The feature that perhaps is at first sight the most apparent in a Fila's temperament is the "ojeriza" to strangers (ojeriza - sharp aversion). On the contrary to other puppies, a Fila Puppy is not inclined to relaxed playing with anyone. He attaches himself quickly to those with whom he lives but is, however, from his earliest youth suspicious of persons he does not know. Suspicion may make him irritated and annoyed and to some extent even make him growl with a certain amount of aggression, but yet without sufficient self-confidence to attack. In the course of his development the aversion against strangers will become more and more apparent. Already as a puppy the Fila will clearly show his displeasure if a stranger would try to touch him. At about the age of one year the Fila would attack any person unknown to him who would try to touch him. An agitated or restless disposition in a Fila is highly undesirable as it may be a symptom of nervousness and insecurity. One must remember that the Fila need provocation in order to attack, for example, when an unknown person stares at him fixedly (as a challenge). Here it becomes evident another typical feature of the Fila: his courage will not allow him to move one step back when facing a provocation of any kind. No matter which instrument is used for the temperament test (rod, broom, towel, chair, etc.) the Fila's reaction is always prompt. Spontaneous, and without any sign of insecurity. He throws himself forward and upwards (making the characteristic diagonal ascent, mentioned in the CAFIB-standard) attempting to reach the face or the throat of the aggressor. Exactly at this point the Fila differs from other dogs (like German Shepherds) who attack only when ordered, doing what they have been taught to do, showing rather the extent of their conditioning than true courage and instinctive reaction against aggression” The author, Fila breeder, Hon. Secretary of CAFIB, and MM-Correspondent for Brazil, AmericoCardoso dos Santos, Jr., describes the typical temperament of the Fila as a result of his traditional function. Modern Bandogge General: “The bandog is designed to be a close quarter combat dog. It excels in realistic protection and can be a wonderful companion/family dog for experienced dog owners. They are quite trainable and easy to maintain. It is naturally good natured, fond of children in general, extremely devoted to its owner and eager to work. Appearance is muscular, behavior is self assured, steady and fearless. It is basically a calm dog that transforms when a bad situation arises”. Todays Uses: The modern Bandog is primarily used as a home/family guardian but it is also the choice of an increasing number of Security agencies as a patrol and crowd control dog. It would make a good candidate for weight pulling and other K-9 sports that require raw physical strength and the eagerness to please their master. The desire of the dog to be with and please it's master coupled with a natural affinity toward exercise suits it to any activity. Furthermore, the very essence of the dog is one of a balance in structure, being free from needless exaggerations, greatly enhancing any dog's chances of leading happy, healthy and active lives as ideal companions. Written by Dan Balderson of England and Stelios Sdrolias of Greece. STANDARD OF THE BRAZILIAN OLDE BANDOGGE General Re-creation of original Bandogge ancestral of Fila Brasileiro. Breeding (at least F3 in one line-breeding side and the other at least F2) Foundation Breeding are some line breeding with different % of the mix: >= 25% Fila Brasileiro (CAFIB and Farm Filas), Stud dogs 2005 (Bandog) F1: Redcapo’s Tornado – 50 % APBT x 50 % Fila Brasileiro; Redcapo’s Jack - 50 % APBT x 50 % Bullmastiff ( in a picture with the author); Redcapo’s Dourada - 50 % Fila x 50 % Bullmastiff F2: Redcapo’s Coronel / Lama - 50 % Fila x 25 % Bullmastiff x 25 % APBT; (SBBA) Redcapo’ Ines - 75 % APBT x 25 % Bullmastiff; Conclusion: The aim of which was to re-create the now extinct original Olde Brazilian Bandogge that was imported from England to Brazil in 1630’s by Holland’s during the invasion against Portuguese’s in State of Pernambuco , Brazil that called Engelsen Doggen or Dogge the Forte Race (300 Bandogs in one Trip). After years of highly selective line-breeding, a dog that is registered and breeding true has been developed. Although our Kennel still sees the need for more work before the ideal is realized, The Olde Brazilian Bandogge (Bandogue Brasileiro), as it is called, is already a great improvement over the bullmastiffs and Filas , of FCI breeding program (conformation show). The Olde Brazilian Bandogge is currently registered by a Kennel Club in the US, namely The Southern Bulldog Breeders Association, SBBA. The SBBA registered our F2 with Bandog and will register our F3 with The Olde Brazilian Bandogge. Acknowledgments In the course of the preparation of a manuscript like this, one which requires cooperation from many individuals to produce, I would like to thanks a SBBA, in particular to the President, Mr. Johnny Courville, that help our Kennel on the US, to be recognized by the Bulldog Breeders .
