We have Coyote here in Taos, NM that are surprisingly large. One ran past us yesterday while out walking on the road that was easily the size of one of our female Akita - his chest was massive. He was really an impressive animal. We have a CO to help reduce the risk of a Coyote grabbing one of our smaller dogs as well as to deter Eagle, Hawk, and Mountain Lions. He seems to be doing his job well. The [Red] Eagles and Hawks are our biggest concern. I set up a game cam recently to track the number of Coyote and other predators in the area and I have had very few images taken of predators while Luytiy [our CO] in on the job. Interestingly, we had to board him for a few days and during those days I got at least an image a night of Coyote - so they are obviously aware of his presence - and he is doing his job. Here are some pics [looks like a small female, about 50lb]... ----

    • I'd just like to see how they fare.
      • I have seen many around Edmonton Canada about 15 years ago I almost hit one in my car it ran across the road saw my car and ran in front for about 50+ meters at almost 60 km/hour it was moving fast then darted away. Once in a while they will grab a pet dog or cat in the river valley with the owners walking the dog without a leash & once on leash, you don't see or hear them much around the city, but at my lake lot you can hear them very close at night and wolves also regularly only seen one so far at the lake but sounds like tons of them some nights. The neighbor saw a pack off wolves below our place at the water one night last summer good thing they don't come around during the day my pup was just a baby then next summer she will be big and I've taught her the border well so they shouldn't be able to lure her into an ambush I'm not really worried to much better safe than sorry she watches the kids well and stays put when dogs walk by on the road. I haven't seen or heard of LGDs killing coyotes but knew a girl who had a grandfather he bred greyhound crosses to run coyotes down and kill them the farmers shot them to, use to poison or trap them also.

            • [quote=greenenergy327]Could a CO take a coyote?[/quote] any lgd that cant should be shot.
              • The other day I stumbled across a fellow that owned two pitbulls for show. He said that he never has any problems with agression to other dogs. BUT, when he lived at a dairy farm he said that coyotes would come around to eat the afterbirth from a calf. He said his female would run right into the middle of them and come out dragging a yote...[/blockquote] Our Akita are similar, they are very sweet with our dogs and each other, and will except new dogs into the family if we introduce them correctly... But any dog or Coyote that shows up in our property or on the other side of the fence is a threat - and our Akita move to eliminate it. Why don't we leave our Akita to do our CO's job? Because our Akita will not stay outside at night - they are not night owls like our CO is. ---- [blockquote]Could a CO take a coyote?[/blockquote] I'm certain our 70lb Akita female could take 1 Coyote, so obviously a 140lb CO would make fast work of one as well... But it's important to understand that a CO wants the "threat" to go away from his/her property more than he/she wants to engage it. Engaging a "threat" physical [meaning making contact] would be the very last line of defence for any LGD. You can think of an LGD's M.O. as "Shock and Awe" and not "The best defence is a good offence". Having said all that, I have seen groups of 4+ Coyote out here hunting together - a group of 3 [or more] 50lb-70lb Coyotes would put a real hurt'n on 1 CO, no matter the size of the CO. That's my opinion anyway. ----
                  • Brad nice pics of the coyote I agree it's a numbers game thats why coyotes & wolves will lure a dog into chasing them so they can gang up and eat them with little risk for them and little chance for the dog luckily they are usually not to bold or they would be much more of a problem and a good LGD doesn't have the prey drive to chase coyotes and risk being ambushed much safer and better to stay with the livestock and drive them away only killing the boldest coyotes that won't take a hint. I got some video you can hear them howling at the lake I just got to find it and a black wolf picture I took outside of Jasper Alberta it was crossing the road at first I thought it was a black bear.
                    • One of my fathers friend had a Saint Bernard killed and eaten by about 4 coyotes
                      • I live just inside the colorado mountains. I own two Great Pyrenees. I know that a mountain lion and a bear both live in the area. But, I haven't had any issue yet. One of my GP's is always on duty. He was about 4 months old when I got him and was in training by his mama to be a working dog. Although he is smaller than my other GP he is the one that doesn't miss a beat on our property. I swear nothing happens on our property that he doesn't know about.
                        • This is picture of a black Canadian Wolf I saw Jan 27 2007 it was walking across the road at first I thought it was a black bear, it is in the bush in the middle
                          • [blockquote]One of my fathers friend had a Saint Bernard killed and eaten by about 4 coyotes[/blockquote] WOW! That's disturbing. ---- [blockquote]Brad nice pics of the coyote I agree it's a numbers game thats why coyotes & wolves will lure a dog into chasing them so they can gang up and eat them with little risk for them and little chance for the dog luckily they are usually not to bold or they would be much more of a problem...[/blockquote] Exactly! That has always been my concern with my dogs - our Shikoku LOVE to play with dogs and our Kai are very curious... I just worry a Coyote may lure them out like that and have their way with them. I guess the same applies to our Akita, they would chase one off just the same [but not with the intent to play]. I just feel better knowing Luytiy is on the job and keeping them away - the Coyote don't want any part of BIG L, so they just stay away. I would never want him to actually kill one - I'm not really interested in anything getting killed. I just want them to stay away from my property. If it came to it tho, I am sure he would "BRING IT". (Family Guy quote) [blockquote]I got some video you can hear them howling at the lake I just got to find it and a black wolf picture I took outside of Jasper Alberta it was crossing the road at first I thought it was a black bear.[/blockquote] I have a night video of some Coyote taunting our females when they were in heat. Kona our Kai Ken was PISSED. The Coyotes were in our yard then jumped the 6 foot fence and just sat on the other side "talking" at our girls who were in the house - it was summer so the windows were open. When our females go into heat (our Akita) we have actually had some male Coyotes jumping at the screens of our open windows of our HOUSE! Kinda creepy! here is the vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DSEfIGgpG4 [blockquote]This is picture of a black Canadian Wolf I saw Jan 27 2007 it was walking across the road at first I thought it was a black bear, it is in the bush in the middle [/blockquote] That's a big wolf! Canadian and Rocky Mountain wolves are huge! There is something about a black wolf that just gives the impression of power. So cool (and majestic). ----
                            • Brad and Carlos, Those are some cool pictures! Thanks for sharing them.
                              • Thanks guys
                                • The elusive wolf I don't see them often but I saw that one from a mile away that's why I thought it was a black bear wolves are rarely seen sometimes heard black bears are easier to find In the Rock Mountains around Jasper Alberta Canada I was on the way to Malinge Lake a high mountain lake when we saw the wolf I had to dig my camera out turn it on It takes 10 seconds luckily he was just walking slow and turned to me at the last minute if I had the camera ready I could have got some great pictures he was gorgeous. we when back their last fall & ran into a smaller predator a crow that wanted our new little 2.5lb pup for dinner but my Fila de Sao Miguel scared it off a the parking lot a few times this is a nice video of the mountain lake with the crow following us for a about 10 min before this lake view http://s497.photobucket.com/albums/rr334/CarlosP1122/?action=view&current=100_3395.flv The bigger dog went swimming at the smaller Moose lake with Ice on it a 45min walk this is her walking on some Ice logs then going for a dip she was running in & out of the Ice water repeatedly and had no problem on the walk back the little dog I stuck in my jacket a few times http://s497.photobucket.com/albums/rr334/CarlosP1122/?action=view&current=100_3425Micawalkingonfrozenlogsagai.flv I'll show some wildlife pics I took later great pics of Elk, Moose, Big Horned Sheep, Mountains, lakes & rivers. I'm sure I saw pair of wolves one morning last fall dark also but not full black at the site of the new S.P.C.A. I was working at In an Industrial area near the edge of Edmonton this is a deer I think the leg bone was found by the dog nearby Some feathers from a kill and eggs Hair stuck on barb wire A video of my 7 month female Fila de Sao Miguel finding a brain I think? while playing In Ice water at the pond owned by a brick company http://s497.photobucket.com/albums/rr334/CarlosP1122/?action=view&current=100_3678Micaonicewithbrain.flv This Is the new S.P.C.A. with a rare cloud overhead. Brad I took a look at some of your videos nice dogs you got more than a few a good sized pack when there not In heat you don't have to much to worry about but they are crazy for the females wow.Do they go into heat together? • Not much of a story, my fathers friend had a fairly large St.Bernard, 200 lbs I believe. He lived in upstate New York I think. He was a moose. But he got dragged outside by one coyote and lured into a trap where 3 others were waiting. Next morning, my fathers friend found the carcass
                                    • [quote=greenenergy327]One of my fathers friend had a Saint Bernard killed and eaten by about 4 coyotes[/quote] the saint bernard was probly too old and heavy. a saint bernard 100 years ago should have killed those coyotes. i have caught dogs that are wild and mostly coyote blood , but they bark and try to scare off a threat before they bolt. pure coyotes dont bother , they just take off and disapear witht he fastest dogs behind them. they are very tough animals, but a proper bred dog half its weight would kill one if caught.
                                      • Like i said, this guys female pitbullwould run right into the middle of them and come out dragging one with her. And she was a show bred! As first he was pretty scared he would loose the dog.. (those wolfs worked over that yote pretty quick - yoy)
                                        • Idk, I think 4 coyotes would be tough for any dog
                                          • It all depends on the coyotes motivation If they are hungry and hunting dog meat if their are enough of them no dog could survive now if they are defending they are looking to drive the intuder out like this video they could wear this wolf down & kill him or he could just kill one of the adults and eat but he wanted the pups if their were less coyotes the pups would be gone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hFtDCgzKLM&feature=related Coyotes Defend Their Den From a Wolf he comes back to the den in part two but they stopped filming. I got this hunting video "Coyote Hunting Is Going To The Dogs" where they use two cur dogs to bait and draw the coyotes so they can shoot them the curs get a bite in the ass once and a while but usually stay ahead 10 or 20 paces and will circle back to get them to follow if they don't come close enough they start by getting the dogs to bark while using coyote calls to bring them in the area. And many dogs can kill a coyote in prey drive most coyotes will run away if there aren't many of them or not that hungry.
