Comment to 'Give me a run down on the BB please!'
  • So I have reading a lot and I mean a lot about Molosser type dogs. I currently live with my 1 year old male (intact) UKC APBT who is really an American Bully X APBT X Amstaff cross, three rescue cats and 1 male (neutered) chiwawa. IT is obivous that the Bernie's breed would make a poor guarding or watchdog, and when the time comes hopefully soon enough I will be getting a new place hopefully in an isolate area with a nice yard. I have been looking at different breeds and I have been learning about the Boerboel. What interests me the most is that most of the breeder websites that I have see and the temperament standard states that they are extremely stable animals who bond close with the whole family. Now I read threats about BB attacks in SA and how there are many unstable lines. My questions are: 1) Given my APBT experience will this be enough to deal with this type of breed? 2) Are they a one person dog or can they be submissive with the family (training and socialization required I know) ? 3) Are they calm and collected until duty calls like many people say or are they those kind of in your face barking dogs with strangers? 4) Will they really protect all of the house like the websites says? people living there/dogs/cats? 5) I also heard that on walks these dogs stay very close to the handler and do not care about roaming and getting distracted by scents and small animals like other breeds? 6) Do they need more exercise than a pit dog? Sorry for the million questions but I read a happy pretty picture on the breeder's websites but then I come here and see how people call them extremely dominant and not for everyone. My pit dog tests me all the time especially now since he has entered his teen years but never with growling or agression, just playing deaf and ignoring my commands at times. I honestly cannot a feed a dog that will resource guard or be food agressive, are all guard breeds like this?
