Just the same as the old belief that all these hundreds of breeds today go back for thousands of years. Most pure breeds were created during the Victorian Era, mostly for reasons of vanity, entertainment and prevailing racism. Yet people still hold on to the myths about purebreds. Despite clear genetic evidence. People don't like reality checks that make them look less glamorous. Same goes for our self-perceived ingenuity about the creation of dogs. We simply weren't that clever! If anything, it was the dogs that were "clever".
