There is a thought that the Rottweiler and the Doberman were created for this purpose.  I can understand a Cane Corso or brindle Bullmastiff or some other coursing dog having this duty.  The article was written in 1905 so I can assume that the authors experience dates back to the late 19th century.  I wonder what breeds would have stood that duty in Britannia at that time?
