    • I have recently added a beautiful baby Presa to my pack and he is just 11 weeks now and would like to have his ears done and have a great vet who will do this but am a bit worried about his age as it is generally done a few weeks earlier any sound advice is welcome thanks[br][link={e_FILE}public/1271434296_17511_FT0_photo0976.jpg][img:width=500&height=667]{e_FILE}public/1271434296_17511_FT0_photo0976_.jpg">[/link][br]

        • You can crop a dogs ears at any age. The best way, IMO, is at 3 days because it has a few benefits to the development of the pups.
          • cheers thanks guys was just worried heard of a few dogs that were never the same after it? his ears are very floppy also not much cartilage , what sort of time frame does the healing take?
            • Depends on the dog, growth rate and length of crop. IMO, with a nice short battle crop, the heal time and training standing time are less.
              • why would you crop such cute ears?
                • Ears tear easily, bleed profusely and, IMO, drop ears are ugly.
                  • what does one do with the dogs when the ears get torn? i have never ever had any injuries on my dogs ears and they are uncropped. the ears on the pic fall down perfectly. i wouldn't do it, but thats the owners decision.
                    • They remain tattered and heal (hopefully.) Reattaching to torn halves is difficult and often fails. Often, every time the dog shakes it head or travels through brush the tear will continue "ripping" until it reaches the base. Very chronic and painful and often involves infections. I know a Jack Russel with a torn ear, which after almost a year is finally fully tattered and healed.
                      • hm, never heard about torn ears. i would consider it as a rather rare injury. taking in consideration that a dog does loose a big part of it's body language when getting it's ears cropped, i would take the risk. instead for trying to heal a torn ear, you can always get them cropped later on. i have had dogs of the same breed with both cropped ears and drop ears and the ones with cropped ears haven't by far had a as clear body language as the ones with drop ears. as i sayed, this is the first time i hear about torn ears.
                        • Most vets in my area prefer to do the ear cropping around 3 to 4 month old pups and after they have all their initial shots including rabies.
                          • Well, for pet and house dogs, it is not common. Having field, hunting and working dogs increases the risks. Either way, it is the owners decision.
                            • It will bother you more then the dog......lol.......I'm saying this out of experience! Here is a dog I owned (Icis) Before-During-After. I know its a different breed, but still a "Battle Crop", it only bothered her when I had her all rapped up. As soon as she was out of the full head rap (lol) she didn't care at all. • Anthony, Conas atá tú? Your lucky you have a vet willing to crop. It is very true that some breeds do look a lot better with their ears cropped and I'm sure your guy will too. How is he getting on with your huskies and akitas ? Is he Irish bred or an import ?
                                • thanks again guys i`m going ahead with it this weekend and am very lucky as it has more or less been banned over her for quite a long time and have one of the old school vets who done it back in the day:) , go raibh maith agat mo chara Tá mé go maith , he`s getting on great with my akita`s one in particular has taken him under her wing but my Siberian hates the world and despite my current efforts has made no exception i only have my presa (cougar) two weeks so it will take a while longer with the husky god love him he had a rough start to life which has left him mentally and physically scarred and so see`s new dogs as a treath he was stolen from my back garden at four months of age and i did not get him back for some time, i only have cougar with the pack when i am out there with him but when i was washing out the back garden the other day out of no where my husky caught a hold of his big floppy ears before i could stop him but he`s ok now it hasn't phased thank god he`s a tuff little presa, i went to wales to get him small breeder but both parents are super dogs [br][link={e_FILE}public/1271801907_17511_FT74041_photo1026.jpg][img:width=500&height=375]{e_FILE}public/1271801907_17511_FT74041_photo1026_.jpg">[/link][br][br][link={e_FILE}public/1271803107_17511_FT74041_photo1033.jpg][img:width=500&height=375]{e_FILE}public/1271803107_17511_FT74041_photo1033_.jpg">[/link][br][br][img:width=320&height=240]{e_FILE}public/1271803199_17511_FT74041_photo1018.jpg">
                                  • IF you can find a vet to do it in the US these days, most will not do it past 4 weeks. You actually do not want to do it too young on these guys, because there are certain ear landmarks that we base our proper crops on. They do not HAVE to be taped, but many vets will send them home that way, and I prefer to leave it as long as possible, just for ease. It can take a couple months for the cartilege to firm up enough to stand on their own. and as an yearling..
                                    • Any news regarding Cougar's ear cropping ?
                                      • Haven't been on this for ages man freaked out the morning i was bringing cougar down me vet rang and cancelled saying a friend vet of his had just been reported for cropping a Bouvier des Flanders and thought it too risky i kept at him too do it for some time and at one point he said ok but changed his mind again so had to let it go :( , he was after been running round when i took the first picture and both his ears stuck back behind his head gas looks like a bad cropping job haha , bout as close as i`ll get to cropping his ears now unless any suggestions he`s nine months old now.
