Friend in need

Nick,

This is from an article I found somewhere

The ranking stage: Three to six months

  • Ranking (dominance and submission) within the household or "pack," including people, is seen and used by a puppy in this stage.
  • A puppy's play group, which may now include those of other species, becomes influential in his or her life.
  • Teething and chewing begins.
  • A puppy experiences another fear stage at four months of age, so be prepared with positive reinforcement and introductions to objects and situations.

The adolescence stage: Six to eighteen months

  • A puppy is most affected by human and dog "pack" members.
  • A puppy may challenge people as part of exploring his or her dominance in the "pack."
  • At seven to nine months, a puppy will begin exploring more of his or her territory, prompting a second chewing phase.
  • A puppy will experience the beginnings of sexual behavior if not spayed or neutered.

What we probably going on here is an ill informed "trainer" treating the CC like it was a toy lapdog. That is the reason I do not let anyone play with my dogs or train them.  Most trainers do not understand guardian dogs and what drives them, even at a young age.

Not sure this can be really fixed, but the owners must take control of the situation and exert influence over their dog.  They should not pass that duty on to someone trying to make a $ as a trainer.

    • I have a friend in  Minnesota  close to Fargo, and about 1.5 hours from st. Cloud who needs some training advice and or trainer.

CC male pup 7 months old  was perfect family pup to 4.5 months went to puppy school and became dog aggressive instantly ( lives with 2 dogs non guardian breeds) Now I won't get into what trainer said all negative about mastiff's in general and she admitted to zero experience with them..her suggestion was to bring pup back with a 9lb lapdog from peoples home and as expected he did no better with him there in fact he showed aggression to that dog.

Whats happening now is dog is overly protective of home ( Owner is pregnant) he is staring down guests ( That he has met before)an has lunged but not bitten anyone No problem with family members ( husband wife a 8 yr old boy and a 2 yr old boy) They have to crate him till he calms down when guest arrive and than he calms a bit and they can let him out.

Now the cleaning woman can let him out in yard while owners away with no drama at all as well as 3 different people who come over when owners are away to let dogs out and feed them.

Need some hints on a local trainer or owner that could help out any ideas I can relay will be appreciated.

      • Hi Nick,

I am sorry that there is nobody who replies.

I cant help you either, when i want to give advice i need to see the dog and the inter action with his surrounding.

I think this is also one of the reasons that there is nobody who gives a reaction.

Goodluck with searching the right advice.

        Greetings des

        • I am far away from dog myself I was hoping someone knew of a trainer in her area. I also asked her for a video

          • Hi,

I dont realy read what they are doing about the behaviour, how do they correct him? Putting him in a crate until he is calmed down is no correction.

Overly protective at that age means problems huge problems in the future. He is running the household there. How are the basic rules, whois going out the door first, laying on the couch well you know the rules. I realy dont care much about this rules but i dont have a dominance issue and i do know it can help when you do have a dominance issue.

            • That's exactly why I was looking to find them a local trainer.

                • Here is a trainer in their area, http://www.midwestdogtraining.com/

Very hard to give advice without being there, but I did find a trainer in their area!

                  • Thanks I have been working with owners on a limited basis and dog has shown improvement.
