FOUND SOME STRAY APBTS, WHAT TO DO?

Yeah not a big fan of the way rescues do things myself either. I mean sure they spend money on vaccinating and desexing and all that, but after all that's done they still have to choose between giving a dog away for free or spending even more for the green goo to kill it, and they opt for the latter. Pretty hard to justify that IMO.
If they wanted to be in a business they should have bought a restaurant or something. Dog shelters should be government funded, I don't think anyone would begrudge a portion of their taxes going that way, and then their job should be to pair the dogs to the right homes for free.

    • so i went to the lake today and on the way there came across 2 pitbull pups, about 6 months old or so running around in traffic. When I got out of the car and called them they immediately came to me and were very friendly. From the condition of the dogs, you can tell they were not well cared for. and one of them has rings down its entire tail from what I am guessing is someone putting a rubberband on it to try and make the tail "fall off". anyways, i cannot bring these dogs home to my house, and the pound is closed on sudnay and will only come get dead or injured dogs. So I took the dogs to the park around the corner and tied them up there and left them with some water hoping either the owners would find them or someone would take them. well on my way home i went by the park they were still there. So i ended up taking them home. I dont know what to do with them now. i have them in the yard in the front vacant house for tonight as I have nowhere else to put them. Landlord will not be happy about that and I must get rid of them by tomorrow. I put a ad on craigslist for free dogs. I basically took them home planning on taking them to the pound tomorrow when its open. So heres my question, should I take them to the pound? they will most likely be put to sleep though right? So maybe they would be better off if I just let them go here by my house, I mean theres feral dogs here, so maybe they can make it as a feral dog too. If i let them loose, i can see them still with a high possibility of getting hit by a car, or somoene finding them and using them for fighting. Dont know what to do. Pound or let them loose?

      • Man thats a shame, look for a no kill shelter. I am not a fan of letting them go as I think they suffer to much in the wild even in a pack.

That Brown and white one is a good looking pup, both look healthy and socialzied so maybe owner will come forward,Good job keeping them safe even if only for a day or two.

        • No, don't let them loose. If it was me I would start making calls this morning to the local shelters. Ask them if they have any rescue groups that take apbt's and if you can get the number from them. Also plan to making more then one rescue grp. call, because most are filled to the brim currently. But with them being young they are easier dogs to place.

          Good Luck!

p.s. if you have any problems let me know, I email some grp's as well.

          • well the problem is I had to get rid of them by this morning. I had my wife take them to the pound. They are on the website now to be adopted out. I dont know how long they hold them before they put them to sleep though. If you can help me rehome these dogs that would be great! I am willing to get them out of the pound. I cant imagine it would be more then $50 a dog or so. I want to keep the 2 together. They are pals. They are dog aggressive with other dogs.

if you can find a rescue group to take them, or someone to foster them, or whatever let me know!

as of now my plan is to take them out of the shelter before they put them to sleep, but once I have them, I dont know what to do with them.

the brown one is quite tall, very lean and muscular dog.

            • The Blue is very nice looking, actually both are very good looking dogs. It's a shame someone just threw them out in the street like that.

              • Send me a pm with the shelter info, city and state. I will put the info out there and see if we can get the dogs pulled. Did you find out how long they plan to keep them? Also adoption fee cost?

                • pm sent i got a call today from a guy from SC. i cant ship the dogs.

                  • UPDATE:

F the pound with a capital F. I will never take a dog to the pound again. Its nothing but a business. business 1st, animal resuce 2nd and the dont give a damn unless they get their money.

I ended up taking the dogs to the pound, with the intent of getting them out of the pound once I was able to rehome them. I found a family that wanted the dogs. The plan was to take the dogs out of the pound and give them to the family today. I didnt think it would cost more than $100 to get them out. Well it costs $300 to get them out, and they wont release the dogs without proof of your home owners insurance saying they allow pitbulls and the dogs must be spayed and nuetered (i do agree with the spay/neuter)

So i tried to tell the people the truth about how i found them, dropped them off and now found a home for them, and if they could just cut me a deal because I am trying to do a good thing and rehome the dogs and prevent them from being put to sleep. But they dont give a shit and all they want is their money. They rather spend more money to continue to house the dogs and put them to sleep then just rehome them. Really pissed me off and theres nothing I can do, even if I had the $300 to pay for them, I still couldnt get them because I dont have proof of this homeowners insurance bullshit, well I rent a mobile home off the grid, how the hell am I supposed to come up with home owners insurance?!?! its ridiculous.

long story short, these dogs are going to end up being put to sleep and I will never take another dog to the pound again. They would have stood a better chance at going feral with the rest of the dogs around here and I basically put them on death row.

The next time something like this happens I am just going to let the dogs go and hopefully they are smart enough to make it out here.

                    • Thats really uncool mate, its a shame that just trying to help has turned into this mess. I hope that somehow it works out, they seem like cool dogs.

                      • I hate to break it to you, but everything you mentioned above is standard practise for shelters. Due to insurance purposes and all the other b.s.l. shelters have had to tighten up and be careful with every placement, or they will not have the doors open too long.

Not to mention the dogs you dropped off, will not leave w/o a vet check, being fixed and given a list of shots as well as deworming medication.

Don't forget the lights, water, food and hourly pay the shelter also has to fork out every day...and thats only naming a few.

Remember folks, after you sign your name on the release form the dogs are now "owned" by the shelter...And take in thousands of dogs/cats every day, most leave by way of the rainbow bridge...Sad but true.

The shelters fix our "problem" ~Lets not forget the reason Why these dogs are running the streets all goes back to poor dog ownership.

                        Same goes for over population.

On another note, I have sent out a few S.O.S.'s for the dogs, but hearing the same ol' story....No Room.

                        • In the future, if you find a stray(s) dogs, even aggressive ones, I'd more than willingly (actually, I'd like to if opportunity presents itself) take them in.

I understand they need to make money and cover the costs of feeding housing spaying and neutering, but at that same time. its going to cost them more to continue to house them and feed them and put them to sleep then it would to just take my money and let them go. I understand the home owners insurance but guess what. I have had my dogs since the day they were born, and always will and I cant provide proof of home owners insurance either. at the end of the day its a business first, just like vets.

dogl, I will keep you in mind next dog I come across, where are you located? im in southern california.

my thinking is the dogs stand a better chance at living being free, then they do locked in a cage with a limited time frame before being put down with the only hope of getting out is adoption, and no one wants to adopt pitbulls unless they are puppies so they are screwed. If i would of let them go they would have stood a better chance, and if they did make it, IMO I dont think these feral dogs have a bad life, they have complete freedom.

                            • When I first seen this thread my first thought was....Why did he even take them, now they are dead. I know that sounds horrible, but its true. Too many good dogs have ZERO chance of ever seeing past the shelter walls again. This is not the animals fault, its Stupid owners who shouldn't of got the dogs/cats in the first place. I have volunteered at shelters and worked with rescue off and on since I was 16, its a draining and sad you want to take every animal home until your home looks like the shelter...lol...

Just do me a favor and give the shelters a break a bit, even if your story is true...That is a common one for people who don't want to keep a animal but don't want to own up...Oh well we just found it on the side of the road and wanted to help.

On another sad note, feral lifestyle doesn't give them much chance of a long life either...But imo living free even just a bit is got to be better then living a month behind bars only to get thrown into a room with a bunch of other horrified dogs and gased.

What I would do is locate a local rescue speak with them and form a bond, remember they are animal lovers too...So that if you ever come across dogs running loose then you will have someone to call.

Local Pet Supplies Plus' normally have a plethura of local rescue info, fyi.

Just a side note, In many other countries dogs are everywhere and also thought of as dangerous, etc. We are still trying to control the population here...It might not be the nicest or the best way...But seeing half dead starving dogs laying all over the streets or ditches is pretty awful too...I'm just saying.

                              • if we were to flip it from dogs to humans. I rather be homeless than in prison on death row.

                                • I completely agree with you...

I completely agree with this statement and I think vets are robbing bastards! In Ireland if you see a dog that has been hit by a car or is gravely wounded and you call a "call out vet" the person who calls has to pay a flat fee of 500 euros and if you dont the dog is left there to die! Also they over charge everything and I know Ive worked in veterinary hospitals, its criminal its not about saving animals its about money! I mean these people got into the job for a supposed love of animals yet they would rather see them die rather than not be paid? Sickening

Sorry about the rant just this kind of thing really gets to me!
