Ovcharkas and Police Work

In Europe they are not used for police work. They were proven in this work with nonsatisfactory results. For police work the best thing is: German S., Malinois, Rott

    • Does anyone know of any CO, CAO, or SRO that is performing police work? It is generally accepted that none of the Ovcharkas are suitable for this kind of work so if you know of any please share. Gary

Gary[/quote] «April, 1st, 1956 for strengthening service on protection of prisoners and search of fugitives in in the "militarized armed guard" (ВОХР) of jails of the Ministry of Internal Affairs is used 10.729 service dogs, including 1.686 search [moslly German Shepherd - Ed.], 1.434 escorts [moslly German Shepherd - Ed.], and 7.609 guard [moslly Caucasian Ovcharka - Ed.], and there are 4 schools on preparation of sergeants-conductors of servce dogs, 25 centers of service dog breeding». This are dogs used inside well known "Archipelag GULAG". And this were ONLY dogs of Ministery of Internal Affairs - but also were others and among them Army... I have had seen some part of them -- hungry, dirty, grey, long heared medium sized COs serving mostly chained an in unbilivable hard conditions -- opposite side of bright official Dog Shows champions. «In Russia, as anywhere, many the specialized dogs breeding, training centers, including - well-known « the Red star » in situated near Moscow settlement Knjazhevo. There were annually trained during the best times up to 500 conductors and 1000 dogs». My expert's opinion is that in the USSR on State juties were served more then several dozen thusands (20-30,000) of Caucasian Ovcharkas - mostly as guard-dogs. "Krasnaya Zvezda - Red Star" was leaded by General-Major G.Medvedev during 1936-1971 (many CP liaders were persecuted and peshished during this period...) - this means that all times Party leaders were happy with this General Medvedev and his dogs.

Having visited several Military bases I can say yes , they were used as Police dogs , More of a Military Police but Police none the less, Russia at the time was a Police state after all , and seeing a fugitive get " escorted " back was certainly shocking . That Prisoner did not attempt escape again , nor did he see another sunrise . Would they make a good choice for any police agency in the US? Hell no Insurance Nightmare . If an 80 # GSD can take a 300# man down like a sack of potatoes , yeah a CO is overkill . and like many have stated the dogs not really keyed that way , can it be done , YES , should it , No . Most Handlers working for Police agencies get less than helpful training ( Thats another topic all together!!!) and alot of dogs end up mediocre at best , basicly its the handler barely having the IQ of the bad guys in the first place but once again another issue , common sense and K9 training is supposed to go hand in hand , it does not in these cases . Poor training for a handler , means a 10-20k investment is now SHOT and is an insurance liability that WILL only get worse . These dogs are good, well trained dogs when they get them , but after a 2 week course Bam , here is your dog , here is a Book , see you later ? yes this is whats being done , right now , in your home towns . Did I just upset a few Police ? I am sure I did . My apologies .
