    • Should the English White or the Black & Tan be backbred ? Is there a place for these game bred sporting dogs ?

        • The English White Terrier can still be found in parts of India. 8)
          • I wouldn't say you could find the terrier in India, but you can find bull terrs with a good amount of that blood in them. The question is how would implement this recreation?
            • This question was thrown out here just to get opinions....but since you asked .....small APBT under 40lbs , mini bt & smooth fox terrier then test them on varmits & cull any dog with health or temperment problems..
              • Those dogs in the picture are Bull Terrs i.e. English White Terriers. There are lines of them unchanged since the British originally brought them in the mid 1700s. You can see from that picture that is the English White Terrier. And knowing what work they are used for, there temperament hasn't changed at all.
                • No, no and no. Those dogs are not White English Terriers. It could be said that they're the closest thing today to the old English breed, but only by default. They are bull-n-terriers, which the White English Terrier wasn't. They're larger and different in type. Whatever they are, they are not White English Terriers.
                    • Probably they could be used for rebreeding. Maybe by crossing a Bull Terr with a Manchester Terrier. I mean, they are the closest relative of the Black and Tan English Terrier, and so to the white English Terrier... The problem is the Temperament, and a extremely dog aggressive dog doesn't fit in the world of our days, it would just encourage trouble, if the extreme Gameness would be preserved. It would provoke the ban of a developing breed...
                      • The English White was ratter & vermin dog . It's all about responsablity
                        • Those photos show heavily inbred fighting dogs and NOT the White English Terrier examples, even if they carry some of that blood. Get real....
                            • Dude, are you friggin' blind??? You're actually using those photos as an argument for YOUR case?   Stop embarrasing yourself and get it through your head, you are delusional and WRONG. Whatever....
                              • 'Dude' I think they are very alike- HEAD–Narrow, long and level, almost flat skull, without cheek muscles, wedge-shaped, well filled up under the eyes, tapering to the nose, and not lippy. EYES–Small and black, set fairly close together, and oblong in shape. NOSE–Perfectly black. EARS–Cropped and standing perfectly erect. NECK AND SHOULDERS–The neck should be fairly long and tapering from the shoulders to the head, with sloping shoulders, the neck being free from throatiness, and slightly arched at the occiput. CHEST–Narrow and deep. BODY–Short and curving upwards at the loins, sprung out behind the shoulders, back slightly arched at loins, and falling again at the joining of the tail to the same height as the shoulders. LEGS–Perfectly straight and well under the body, moderate in bone, and of proportionate length. FEET–Feet nicely arched, with toes set well together, and more inclined to be round than hare-footed. TAIL–Moderate length, and set on where the arch of the back ends, thick where it joins the body, tapering to a point, and not carried higher than the back. COAT–Close, hard, short, and glossy. COLOUR–Pure white, coloured marking to disqualify. CONDITION–Flesh and muscles to be hard and firm. WEIGHT–From 12 lb. to 20 lb. I agree the weight is incorrect. The dogs in the picture look heavier, I will ask the breeder their weights.

You've just insulted and run. Tim
                                      • There is no insult in the part you're quoting. Read it again. Also, nice first post. Old member - new name, perhaps?
                                        • there are plenty of breeds out there (Patterdale, JRT, Rat,Jadgt, verious Fiests) that do that function now.
                                          • fine those indian dogs do have a lot of white terrier in them. but their temper changed a lot, besides the size doesnt even resemble the white terriers. the white terrier wasnt feroucious at all but like all terriers they can fight incredibly well for their size, and are very agile, that is why it was crossed with the bulldog ehich was a larger dog to make a small but exelent fighting breed but the question was if the white terrier should be brought back, my answer is no, even if it was possible to bring it back. there are really a lot of terrer dogs that have the same function as the white terrier used to have, and are extremely healthy, dont forget about that, bringing a breed back usually involves a lot of health problems. we dont need more breeds, but we do need more quality, so if anyone is thinking about bringing tis terrier back simply choose one of the so many terrier breeds and breed them for their original function and health.

Other working terriers could be mistaken for being so-called 'ferocious' whilst doing work, much like I would have imagined the EWT to have been in temperament. Most pictures I have seen of the Indian Bull Terrier undoubtedly have bull dog blood in them, but there are others to me that are almost identical to any EWT picture I have seen.
