Instincts

Thank you for sharing your experience with your Shar. What you have read and heard is true but training and upbringing is important in shaping the dogs ultimate behavior. So the one you have did get some good upbringing and you are benefiting from that. Let him stay outside at night sometimes and watch his guardian instinct really flourish. They are very alert at night and tend to rest during the day. Thanks for sharing your story - It is great to know when our LGDs are doing well. More photos in the Album please. :)

Best regards,  Gary

We have had our Sar for 2 1/2 years now. We received him from a young family he "outgrew" when he was one year old. I can't say enough good about this dog! We were not familiar with this breed of dog and were somewhat worried from some things we had heard and read about guardian dogs. He was extremley well socialized and had been to obediance training "3" times. We needn't have worried.

He did not have the training as a puppy this type of dog needs if he is to be a working dog therefor he tends to think the sheep are his very own fluffy toys. He doesn't hurt them he just is too rough with them. SO - He is our companion/house/guardian dog and excells at all of them! He would be content to be out in all weather but he already had a tick disease when we got him and too much cold will affect his hips. He is great to have in the house except on the rare occasion when he barks in the house it will rattle the windows. When he is out he takes his job VERY seriously! I would not want to be a wolf, coyote or fox and have him after me. All predators keep seriously away from our farm! Including eagles. I actually saw him run off an eagle that had designs on HIS chickens!

Now right here I want to say I have never owned a dog with such wonderful instincts. Nothing messes with his animals! Thank goodness he loves people. We had read how "aloof" this type of dog is. WRONG! He is the most loving and considerate dog we have ever had. Just my two cents worth.

      • Wonderful !

          • Wonderful dog !

            • We would love to have him out more but his condition won't allow this. He loves the cold and the snow but he gets very stiff and sore if left out too long in the worst weather. Also if left out at night he tends to "see ghosts" and is running and barking constantly. He does seem to know when he has done too much but he is a tough customer so we have to watch out for him. One thing we don't have to worry about. He knows what his territory is and NEVER strays off.

That is normal behavior - they are nocturnal alert barkers and will do laps around the house of property barking to ward off "invadors". That is to be expected.

                • To Gary, I really don't mind him doing his "duty". It in fact gives me piece of mind and sort of relaxes me. My wife is months away from retiring and needs her sleep so we have to reign him in. Also his condition from anaplasma is such that if he does too much especially in the cold months he suffers. From what the vet tells us he will get worse with age and we want to keep him active and happy for as long as we can.

                  • I understand. As always, these things are situational dependent and you have to do what is right for you.  Best wishes.
