feral dogs in my neighborhood

[quote1325235473=babigirl] Lol, So....You moved to Detroit then?! [/quote1325235473] !teeth lol That was actually my first thought too! Detroit Dog Rescue, founded nine months ago by filmmaker Monica Martino and hip-hop artist Daniel (Hush) Carlisle, received the gift in the form of stock options last Thursday from the woman, who was moved by a on-air news segment showcasing their work in finding and rehabilitating some of Detroit's thousands of stray dogs. DDR spokesman David Rudolph said the donor tracked the organization's work after first seeing them on television in May, and decided to make the donation after watching them deal with Ace, an emaciated pit bull found at a west side hardware store in early November euthanized by Detroit Animal Control, despite people claiming to be the dog's owner. DDR tried to get the dog out of animal control, and filed a temporary restraining order to prevent his death after a state-mandated five day holding period to allow owners to surface. The dog was euthanized, despite protests from members of the Detroit City Council, other animal welfare groups and residents. “This donation is just the beginning,” said Monica Martino, Co-Founder and CEO of Detroit Dog Rescue. “While Hush and I were working on the streets of Detroit, we saw firsthand the true scope and scale of the stray dog situation. This problem in Detroit is an epidemic and the system that is in place to control it is broken. The first step is to build a no-kill shelter." DDR estimates there about 50,000 stray dogs living in Detroit. Many of them are pit bulls and pit bull mixes. “Detroit Dog Rescue is much more than just a shelter. It’s an organization that will succeed through community outreach, economic assistance programs and education, because we cannot end the stray dog problem without the citizens of Detroit,” said Carlisle.

    • these are just 2 of the many dogs i see on a regular basis...when its trash day you can find these guys climbing in trash cans etc. the all brown one had a pup that looked to be about 3 months old with her not too long ago...dont see the pup anymore...most likely got hit by a car...these dogs are pretty smart tho and get out of cars way...lucky for them not too many cars in my neighbor hood. its just interesting to see the feral dogs surviving are the medium sized pariah type. the all brown one you can tell has some pit mixed in. i have seen these guys in packs of about 10 sometimes...ill continue to take more pics when i can..just kinda cool to me...i rather see dogs at the shelter get released to the wash by my house and at least have a chance instead of getting put to sleep..theres also alot of smaller dogs i see that get picked off by coyotes as we have quite a few here...these dogs are also really shy and skittish and are scared of ppl[br][link={e_FILE}public/1325135778_18975_FT0_102_1876.jpg][img:width=500&height=333]{e_FILE}public/1325135778_18975_FT0_102_1876_.jpg">[/link][br][br][link={e_FILE}public/1325135778_18975_FT0_102_1877.jpg][img:width=500&height=333]{e_FILE}public/1325135778_18975_FT0_102_1877_.jpg">[/link][br][br][link={e_FILE}public/1325135778_18975_FT0_102_1879.jpg][img:width=500&height=333]{e_FILE}public/1325135778_18975_FT0_102_1879_.jpg">[/link][br][br][link={e_FILE}public/1325135778_18975_FT0_102_1880.jpg][img:width=500&height=333]{e_FILE}public/1325135778_18975_FT0_102_1880_.jpg">[/link][br]
      • The first dog looks like its definitely got some pit in it. It kind of looks like a presa. Not used to seeing packs of dogs (feral) in the UK but its definitely a tough life for those dogs out there.
        • Just seems like a bad situation waiting to happen, in my opinion. Its seen all over the world a kid is playing outside and gets attacked by a pack of feral dogs and coyotes, and it always seems to shock people. They are animals living by instinct and will do what nature dictates, and if that means lookin' at small kids as dinner, so be it. It is cool to see variety in the strays, but I personally wouldn't be letting my kids(if I had any) or small dogs out without me and the big dogs out with them. Keep the pics coming, though. It'd be kinda interesting to get a DNA on the strays to see what's in them, too bad the DNA profiling isn't that good yet.
          • MonsterQuest did a stupid alarmist episode on feral dogs. They DNA tested a dead stray and didn't find anything interesting. I may be thinking of another show, but I know I saw a show where they trapped a stray and ran a dog breed analysis on it. It came back as having GSD and bull terrier and a few other things.
            • Lol, So....You moved to Detroit then?! Sadly its a sign of the times...Breaks my heart. Half the dogs that you see were owned...at Some point.
              • Ah, the good old days when you could use your dogs to clean up the neighborhood.
                • Yeah this is actually the natural niche of the dog as an animal. This is dogs, then we also keep modified strains for specialised roles within our society. Seeing these dogs doesn't make me as sad as seeing show dogs does. People always complain about all the dogs in the shelters... just let em out.
                  • i doubt any of these dogs were owned at one time...i have already seen a few dogs that were pups are full grown now...i agree to just let the dogs outa the shelters...i think some should try to be rehomed tho. i also agree feral dogs can be dangerous but i dont look at these guys as dangerous tho....i did run into them when i was walking one of my dogs once and there was alot of them and were pretty bold, they came real close and one of them got into it with my dog and that initiated that pack response so like 2 more jumped, i kicked them off, now when i walk my dogs and if we cross paths they keep thier distance
