rotts, dobes, and the panja mastiff

[quote1327057822=cawkazn] Hey I wanted to ask your guys thoughts on: 1) rottweilers 2) dobermans 3) the panja mastiff...also whats the deal with the f1 gen rott x apbt is good but further generations are not? [/quote1327057822] Rottweilers and Dobermans need training and leadership, they are not a pet you can just leave them to themselves. The Panja Mastiff is basically extinct since the only kennel is out of business. The Rottweiler and Pitbull cross has gotten such a bad rap because it was bred by bad people who probably expected a dog to be fine without training like the Pitbull. These are both high energy dogs that can get stir crazy if left alone too long. If a breeder was to select for the Rotty intelligence and train them in Shutzhund it would be a great medium sized dog.

      • 1. good 2. bad 3. ugly Lol. Seriously how I feel. I think a rott x apbt could turn out nice, but I think attempts to make that cross into something have all been made by idiots to date, who have made crap dogs. "the panja mastiff" is ugly in that it's just makes you cringe and feel a bit sick to think of the boneheads that are typically breeding them and how crappy their breeding practices are. If cattle musterers did the cross and bred them for performance, rott/apbts could turn out excellent by my estimation. Pretty much as good a cattle hanging cross as you could hope for. But criminals trying to make a scary dog? Forget it.
        • yeah i totally agree with your thoughts on the panja mastiff. can you elaborate on your thoughts as to why the rott is good and also why the dobe is bad?

            • Rottweiler crosses aren't known to be good past there F1 crosses
              • Right, and that is because of who was breeding them. The Rottweiler temperament just doesn't disappear unless you select for the APBT temperament which those breeders did.

                  • Not left alone, but left to itself. Most police dogs need an occupation or they get into trouble, especially with rank aggression and a submissive owner.

                      • Yeah the Rott temperament does much better with off leash protection than an APBT but you have to train for it. Some people just like the APBT temperament because it is territorial and intimidating but when they get a hold of someone they don't like to out.
