    • has anyone ever heard of wild/feral donkeys being hunted with dogs? I guess they are hunting wild donkeys in texas but I am wondering if dogs are ever used?
      • I've definitely heard of it, but don't have anything in the way of photos or links or anything. Have just heard of it being done, for example heard about a crazy guy that used to hunt donkeys on a dirtbike with a big wolfhound cross somehow awkwardly sitting on his lap, and the dog would kill donkeys one out. Saw a few different people saying they knew the guy, a well known character in a small community, so I'm inclined to believe it's quite probably true. Have also heard of feral horses being caught quite extensively back in the day in australia. I do actually have this screenshot of a post made on ozziedoggers by a guy named africa, which mentions his boerboel x bullmastiff killing a presumably feral donkey that came onto his yard, but that's not a case of someone purposefully hunting donkeys with dogs-
        • well i went hiking today, came across some feral donkeys and the dogs took off after them. didnt catch them or anything, but I was surprised of my dogs speed and how he moved over the rugged terrain etc....I can see how a leggier dog would have an advantage transversing terrain like that. I honestly have never seen my dog run so fast I was really surprised, he gave them a good chase but they eventually out ran him. once they got a good distance away he came back and I snapped some pics. so yeah, sparked my interest in the possibility of hunting these guys with my dogs.
          • this pic is full zoom on my cam so quality kinda sucks. 2nd pic is the 3 of them looking at them from the other side of the canyon. started walking my female again on short walks, trying to slowly build strength in the rear leg. Always have her leashed though so she cant get too rowdy. shes put on a lot of weight.[br][link={e_FILE}public/1329105852_18975_FT86568_101_2132.jpg][img:width=500&height=333]{e_FILE}public/1329105852_18975_FT86568_101_2132_.jpg">[/link][br][br][link={e_FILE}public/1329105852_18975_FT86568_101_2133.jpg][img:width=500&height=333]{e_FILE}public/1329105852_18975_FT86568_101_2133_.jpg">[/link][br][br][link={e_FILE}public/1329105852_18975_FT86568_101_2134.jpg][img:width=500&height=333]{e_FILE}public/1329105852_18975_FT86568_101_2134_.jpg">[/link][br]
            • That's pretty cool. If I was you I'd be chasing them around with the dogs for sure, your dogs will never catch one but that's ok. Still heaps of fun and great exercise for your dogs too. Might be for the best you won't end up wondering what the hell to do with a lugged up donkey. Which I think your dogs could do btw, probably over qualified but they're probably not gonna run one down. That said you never know, a donkey might just stay and fight. That dude's bullmastiff/boerboel apparently got it's teeth into one so they mustn't always run. Do you you ever get the urge for a faster dog? I only ask cause I was getting into these sorts of shenanigans with my bandogs chasing stuff around and the urge for a faster dog just grew and grew the more I did it. Think your next dog will be another bully?
              • they were really fast! i have never seen them move so fast. I think if I could have recorded it, it would have surprised everyone. but obviously a leggier type dog will be faster. I do want a faster dog sometimes, Im happy with my dogs though as I am not a big time hunter. I am really wanting to cross my male with a great dane. greyhound crosses my mind but one day I would like to cross him with a great dane. In the future I may get a dogo one of these days. in a few years I am going to move to texas or colorado, when I do I am going to get back into hunting much more. Right now I am very busy with work and boxing, I dont have much time for anything else, but I do get my dogs out every weekend.
                • im thinking if I cross my male with a great dane it will produce something like this....also a few more pics of the donkeys. [br][img:width=327&height=400]{e_FILE}public/1329199264_18975_FT86568_20080709103049_104056_3.jpg">

                    • so to answer your question yes i would like a leggier and faster dog, but then i ask myself why? so he can catch donkeys? lol....i have no need for one at the moment. my dogs serve their puprose as pets and guard dogs for the house.
                      • Hunting wild donkeys is common in North Africa. They are known to usually stop and fight over flight. In my opinion its more backward countryside/rural thinking of 'duh i am gonna let my dogs chase anything for the hell of it.' In the Rif (Morocco) its common for dogs to be killed or decapitated from a single kick but thats probably what your dogs need to stop them chasing them down. Its my own opinion. What would you do with a dead chewed up donkey! A wild boar or pig can be eaten so there is a purpose of the hunt.

You will see I stated that I dont need or want a dog for donkey hunting. Expletive deleted by Admin
                          • Where was that hiking spot you went to, San Bernardino? Looks a lot like MountainLion country by the way. My girl is fast, very fast at 23 inches and 68 pounds, with lean strong muscles, and yet, I am not even sure she would be abe to catch the Donkeys. Better that way, I wouldn't want her to get hurt when we are in the middle of no where and have to carry her on my back all the way to the car...lol One thing for sure, she WILL go after them, and there is nothing I could do to stop her. We saw 2 coyotes in my hills yesterday, and she transformed into a different dog I didn't know she could be. Good thing I had her on the leash, because she went nuts! BTW, nice dog you posted. That's Diesel right from Lee's breeding if I am not mistaking?
                            • I guess instinct tells you you want to hunt these things after you've just stumbled onto some and watched your dogs chase them, then your logical rational brain starts thinking about the logistics of it and you shelve the idea. I tell you what though, if I lived on a big property that had feral donkeys living on it I'd buy a big freezer and genuinely consider harvesting the odd one for dog food. But yeah while living how I think cawkazn is (and me) it's like what are you gonna do, haul a big donkey carcass out of the hiking trail back to your car, strap it to the roof, drive through the suburbs of california with it then get it home and start trying to cut it up with a kitchen knife. Lol. I think realistically you need a whole setup that accommodates such a lifestyle. You need your own big chunk of land where you can just drive from the wilds back to home a long a dirt trail, with big freezers like I said, maybe a big freezer room with hanging racks and etc. I would love to get into that lifestyle though. Growing your own vegetables and fruits, keeping chickens, brewing your own beer, and harvesting your own meat from your own land. That's the dream for me.

                                • lol true
                                  • holla, bwa ha ha
                                    • I forgot I'm a mod (I think still?), maybe stop talking about decapitating each other's families hey guys? Really think it's a misunderstanding anyway, as far as I could tell moussine was just saying that could happen if you aren't careful, not that he hopes it happens. Just that it's dangerous. I suspect he's probably trying to dissuade you from allowing your dogs from chasing donkeys, as undoubtedly most people would. Not me, however.
                                      • Did he say he would like to see that? Looking again his words were it might be what they need to stop chasing donkeys, maybe he's saying your dogs are dead game? Lol. Like really? that's the ONLY way they would stop? Wow, sick dogs. Honestly I wouldn't care if he said that to me. If my dogs are going to chase things and try to kill them I better be ready for the possibility they might just get killed back, goes with the territory.

[/quote1329372281] thats why i am moving to colorado or texas, looking to eventually purchase about 40 acres. The idea of using the donkey for dog food did cross my mind as I would like to feed my dogs raw, and cant find a cheap supply other then hunting it. But I dont have a big freezer or the means to butcher the animal

                                            • I love the name of this thread "wild donkeys" cracks me up. So guys how bout them wild donkey?
                                              • You should have seen this wild donkey that was at the pub the other night. Wild as hell.
                                                  • now your guys comments made me laugh. So I guess that area I went hiking has alot of donkeys. sometimes they get hit by cars on you will see a dead one on the side of the road. Anyone ever think of taking road kill and using it for dog food?
                                                    • I know a lot of people that do that, unfortunately, lol.
                                                      • im wondering how long till the meat goes bad though. also how long do you have after a kill till it goes bad? theres no hogs in my area but i have come across feral goats...im looking at starting my dogs on the feral goats and then jumping to hogs. I am going to have to pay to hunt on a ranch for the hogs though.
                                                        • Where I live the department of wildlife has a list of people who want newly killed deer from the side of the road for food. Let's just say the list is packed
                                                          • I actually saw a dog eating a dead donkey on the side of the road once.
                                                            • my girl caught a gopher today and tried to eat it, i guess she is starting small...lol
                                                              • awesome! did you let her eat it? my youngest male caught a mole a while back and ate it up.
                                                                • no, i had her spit it out and let it live.
