original great dane

Yes no exaggerations. Of course show breeders would call this dog not typy enough, even though this is exactly what the Great Dane was always intended to look like

That is an awesome photo of an awesome representative of the breed. All stuff and no fluff.

      • Yes thats what a boar-hound should look like. Any used for boar today do of course, they're definitely not Great Danes used any more but quite often are crossed with Dane along the line.

Look in horror what the show ring did to the Great Dane!!!! Viceroy is a dog from 1899, in the early days, before the Danes destruction.

Of course show breeders would call this dog not typy enough, even though this is exactly what the Great Dane was always intended to look like......it has bone substance and built for speed, functional. A working dog with none of all the health problems we see in todays Great Danes.  They also lived for a long time even the early show dogs. Today they go downhill at about five!

              • Yes. The "fluff" is also a chronic welfare issue as these dogs suffer for the way they look, it's what's termed "qualzucht" breeding. Breeding for intentional deformities, line bred for exaggerations that win in the show ring. Ever more exaggerated in type until the breed is a wreck of dysfunctionality. Useless for work or for a pet.

                • it sure would be nice to see dogs like that again!

Come to Australia. They're called pig dogs, cheap as dirt too.

                    • i used to have some irish wolfhounds and they were so strong and they like to run but it is hard to find good ones because all they do is breed them for show at least for the most part. it is hard to find one that is really tough instead of soft. that old photo of the great dane reminds me of how wolfhounds used to look

                      • Probably to only place to find a good one would be in a farm doing its job in a country where they still have a purpose as need. They probably would not look like show dogs.

Maybe look for an Irish farmer who has them working.

                        • German Dogge (the Great Dane)

What can i say when M. Otto Kreckwitz, of Munich, a great authority on the breed, says that "the nearest approach to the German Dogge (the Great Dane) of our time is one which is represented on a Greek coin from Panormos , dating from the 5th century BC, and now in the Royal Museum, Munich. This dog with cropped ears is exactly our long-legged elegant Dogge with a graceful neck."

                          • Like all breeds you can find exaggeration to the extreme and everything in between. They are out there as well as within the show dogs. Selection is key and it's rather easy to breed away from breed type.
