          • A national effort to help Hurricane Ike pets 0 Comments POSTED September 13, 8:47 PM Teri Webster - Pet Examiner ShareThis LINK RSS SUBSCRIBE Include other special offers from Examiner.com Terms of Use (Source: Houston SPCA) Animal rescuers calling themselves Storm Riders braved Hurricane Ike so they could help hundreds of dogs, cats, horses, and other animals in the Houston area. The group brought their pets, sleeping bags and suitcases and stayed at the Houston SPCA, where they will care for pets and start rescue efforts as soon as safety and the weather permits it. The Storm Riders will be joined by animal rescue crews from across the country that are sending experienced volunteers to help, according to the Houston SPCA Web site. The groups include the Denver Dumb Friends League, SPCALA, Humane Society of Missouri, and Code 3 Associates, Inc. and the Society of Animal Welfare Administrators. The North Shore Animal League from New York is sending its 40-ft. mobile rescue unit, equipped with an emergency response team, to help the hardest-hit areas. Information on rescues, lost or found animals are be available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through the Houston SPCA animal rescue hotline at 877-661-0161 or 713-861-0161. The SPCA needs these items. Extensive recovery efforts are underway in Louisiana and Texas after Hurricane Ike hammered the Gulf Coast with winds of up to 100 mph, causing extensive flooding, and damage to homes and office buildings.
