Training Defense Before Prey

I really am at the learning phase which is why I work with a trainer. But the approach for personal protection was to take the drives that the dog had and direct them We never tried to build up any drives....of course Yukon has extreme drives on both sides so that could be why We used the prey drive and defense drive right from get go. Everything was a game at first. Think in Yukon's mind it is still a game....

An article, by Mr. Ed Frawley, that is published on leerburg challenges the practice of training Defense before Prey drive. Mr. Frawley said it is foolish and stupid to do so. The idea is to have an open discussion on the sequence of training and the benefits derived from the proper sequencing in developing the desired protection dog. Hey, This is a very political topic. Some say its not bad to start a dog in defense ( defense oriented dogs that have low prey drive ) , whilst others will say this type of dog isnt appropriate for protection training. Not wanting to comment mr. Frawley`s ideas , I think you gotta work with what you have. If he has been blessed with dogs balanced in drives, I will agree with him. On the other hand, if the dog has strong nerves but is more defense oriented, I see nothing wrong with an experienced trainer bringing him in defense. This is a task for experienced trainers and decoys. A dog can be ruined if started in defense the wrong way. Regards

i don't like working defence before prey, i feel that the dog should first of all develope his prey drive and work it to his age when he can show better his defence if he has any and from there slowly and nicly develope into his fight drive but each to his own when you do train guard dog it's no matter what kind of prey drive he has, we will look more into his defence because most of usuall guard are there to scare and show themselfs the other part of them, the serius protection dogs, wel i don't see how you can work a good full soiled bite when the dog alredy knows defence, but i can be wrong let me ask around for that

I talked to my trainer about this and this was his take on it, he broke it up based on the dogs I have and their personalities. Yukon: he had no problems working the bite and he had and has extremely high defense and prey drives. Him it was all about directing those drives in the right direction and due to his younger age at the time..not pushing but making it a game. Ebony: only has medium drives...have worked up the prey drive some, and let the defense drive go as she just is not interested in fighting anyone or anything. So she is an excellent candidate for SARs
