Lack of diversity in Australia

[quote1280502142=soldiermonkey] [quote1279660133=Bulldog] You can pretty much write off the DDB as I dobt you will find anything suitable over here. As with the AB and the Beorbeol you will have to do your homework and visit a lot of dogs to find whats good or not.Their are some good ones but a lot of crap to sift through. Obviously Ataraxia for Beorboels. As far as Bandogs I am sure you know there are very few breeding past an F1 over here and if they are they are dogs they got from someone else not bred themself. There is Maria Bryan (Tru blue keneels) QLD also breeds Neo's and Katrina hartwell Southern Cross Kennels. I may have something later this year. All depends what you are looking for. I did pm you beofre when you were wnating to get rid of your dog but you never bothered to respond. [/quote1279660133] Its a shame about the DDB not being what it once was because I really have a soft spot for them... I got quite a few msgs about my last boy and thought I responded to them all, but obviously not, sorry bout that. In the end I couldn't part with him and spent a fortune on training instead, only to have him die of bloat a year or 2 later. [/quote1280502142] I remember you saying you couldnt part with him.I just sent you a message at the time you were going to give him away to be wary of a couple od individuals who are known in certain circels and go after that type of dog.Good that you kept him he was a nice dog and if you had of been closer I might have taken him off your hands lol.

    • After a couple of years dog free, I am back looking at getting my next dog(s).. I am realising how limited my choices here are. I may end up having to look at x-breed type bandogs. In the pure breeds I seem to be limited to the following choices. (Obviously I am interested in the mastiff types rather than the malinois....) The breeds I am looking at are as follows; 1. Boerboel 2. Dogue De Bordeaux 3. American Bulldog less likely but maybe with the right breeding... 4. Rottweiler 5. Bullmastiff I am wanting to get them some ob and pp titles so am needing dog(s) with a nice balance of drives and ability. are there any I am missing along these lines do you think? regarding bandogs, anyone know of breeders who are working their dogs?
      • hummmm - there is a CAO and Anatolian breeder there also at this http://thebreedersdirectory.com/VOLKODAV-Central-Asian-Ovcharka.html
        • From an internet research point of view I really do like the CAO (never having seen one in real life) I do have some reservations about its overall trainability, but I am interested enough to find and visit a breeder and see first hand. Thanks for the tip

            • I talked to this guy before http://www.australiasbestbodyguards.com.au/ he really seems to care and believe in what he's doing. Not sure why he wanted to talk to me, i don't have much interest in the bandogge or "designer dog" scene.
              • Personally I wouldnt waste my time with them.He cares about them but most dont.Never seen any work and when you ask him he cant provide any footage of any working.Overpriced for what they are.I am sure he has invested money in them but only good for him maybe.I hsave seen one didnt think much of it.
                • Yeah, I would have to say the picture under "training" is a joke. Just play.
                  • He had described to me what his dogs were like, sort of "natural protectors", he's not really into the bitework scene. I did have to give him a bit of a brush-off. I'm not into having long distance calls with someone whose breeding activities I cared nothing about. !teeth

And Tosamama, it wouldn't shock me if people were interested in importing Tosa semen here for bandog programs. Given the breed laws here that would be the only way you could get some Tosa blood into your lines...

Well, he was barking up the wrong tree anyway LOL
                          • CAO is not a good breed for PP work. hugo
                            • Dude... Talk to Rodja, aka Bushwick, about the malinois down there. Some of the best around. I would honestly whipe those 5 breeds you wrote out of the contention... Too much of a gamble. Also talk to Tony Macallam aka McK9 on here for working cross dogs. He's got some of the best in the world and he's in your country.

A good friend of mine breeds Malinois here so if I wanted to go that way I would be covered... I am more into the mastiff types anyways tho, but I agree with you, for strictly manwork I wouldn't go past the drivey buggers..
                                • He had cao, but that doesn't take away his military handling experience. He now has 2 jagds and a bullarab for hunting. He had a badass malinois that just made his way into the military. I would seriously talk to him. You can also look into the Kiwi mastiff out of new Zealand. It is a ddb bandog that would suit your bill.
                                  • a bandog based on the DDB would probably suit me down to the ground... i will try and google up some info, thanks for the tip

I like the look of some DDB'S but looks dont mean much if they have no heart.I wouldnt use one in a cross unless I could find one that works well and ver here its just too hard.
                                            • The breed laws here are annoying, from the information I have seen on the net (not having met any of them) I would add Tosa, Dogo and Presa to the list of dogs I am looking at, and they would probably be at the top of the list too...
                                              • Soldiermonkey, Austrailia has some of the most interesting, and capable working dogs on the planet. Hoggers have really came up with some great new breeds. Look into the Bully Greyhound, Ohallaran Hounds, and Bull Arabs, I wrote pieces on each breed, I am sure you can find some things I've written on MD as well if you que it in the search. Good Luck!
                                                • Boom, I agree that Australia has some bloody good working crosses. Hard as nails most of em. I occasionally go and look at the crosses being sold on boardogs.com. Some very interesting dogs pop up there.
                                                  • Here are some pups for sale in Darwin. They are supposedly DDB X Bandog. http://darwin.gumtree.com.au/c-Pets-dogs-puppies-DOGUE-DE-BORDEAUX-X-BANDOG-W0QQAdIdZ216560299 Personally I would contact Maria. She has 2 litters of bandog pups on the ground right now and a litter of pure Neo's.Any of them would suit your needs. http://www.abcalert.com/ I think somewhere you said you were In SA?I have a dog down there that we will be breeding but I cant say when but they may be a bit sharp and they may not suit you after your last dog. Also have a look at the bandogs or f1's not bandogs that are for sale on boardogs at the moment. They look alright but the price is pretty high for my liking. My friends bred the pit.I have similar blood to the male and just as good.
                                                    • Hey there Bulldog, thanks for the links, I am in Melbourne right now but getting posted (sent) somewhere else in November, I may be going back to SA or Qld... I didnt think Maria was breeding at the moment for some reason... but yes, anything that comes out of her yard would probably be worth owning. I think I have looked at the bandogs you are referring to at boardogs ($1800?) the neo bitch looks great but because I sometimes move around the different states I will stay away from anything with pit blood. Also, I wouldn't pay much more than a grand for any bandog (or f1) I would probably accept that I would have to look at around the 2-3K for a boerboel tho...
                                                      • Maria doesnt have anything Bandog planned for a little while at this stage, I have a couple of litters planned in the coming months but those on my waiting list come first. I am stupidly hard to get hold of at the best of times. Try matildadowns@bigpond.com
