They remain tattered and heal (hopefully.) Reattaching to torn halves is difficult and often fails. Often, every time the dog shakes it head or travels through brush the tear will continue "ripping" until it reaches the base. Very chronic and painful and often involves infections. I know a Jack Russel with a torn ear, which after almost a year is finally fully tattered and healed.
