The geographical region you're in is important. There are different predators that your dog will be guarding against. Are you concerned about bears, coyotes, wolves, boars or what other type of animal? If concealed carry is allowed, get a license always bring a gun. The dogs you mention aren't really hiking dogs. They are more guard dogs but I guess a few miles with a sack on their back wouldn't be too much for certain breeds. There is another member on here that has about 12 or 13 dogs in his house that are real working hiking dogs he hikes 10 plus miles with them with a moderate to heavy pack on his dogs.
