Detroit Dog Rescue, founded nine months ago by filmmaker Monica Martino and hip-hop artist Daniel (Hush) Carlisle, received the gift in the form of stock options last Thursday from the woman, who was moved by a on-air news segment showcasing their work in finding and rehabilitating some of Detroit's thousands of stray dogs. DDR spokesman David Rudolph said the donor tracked the organization's work after first seeing them on television in May, and decided to make the donation after watching them deal with Ace, an emaciated pit bull found at a west side hardware store in early November euthanized by Detroit Animal Control, despite people claiming to be the dog's owner. DDR tried to get the dog out of animal control, and filed a temporary restraining order to prevent his death after a state-mandated five day holding period to allow owners to surface. The dog was euthanized, despite protests from members of the Detroit City Council, other animal welfare groups and residents. “This donation is just the beginning,” said Monica Martino, Co-Founder and CEO of Detroit Dog Rescue. “While Hush and I were working on the streets of Detroit, we saw firsthand the true scope and scale of the stray dog situation. This problem in Detroit is an epidemic and the system that is in place to control it is broken. The first step is to build a no-kill shelter." DDR estimates there about 50,000 stray dogs living in Detroit. Many of them are pit bulls and pit bull mixes. “Detroit Dog Rescue is much more than just a shelter. It’s an organization that will succeed through community outreach, economic assistance programs and education, because we cannot end the stray dog problem without the citizens of Detroit,” said Carlisle.
