You say that they breed true to type for the last twenty years? Do you think that twenty years is a long time? First off. With the Corsos of old as in any breed that was used for function instead of form. There was no definate type. The farmers and country folk who owned them could have cared less what the dog looked like as long as it got the job done. A dog considered a Corso would have been any large boned ,fierce,wide chested and powerful animal that was protective of its home and suspicious of strangers. Sounds like a Bandog to me.
