Grand Theft Auto is an action-adventure franchise originally created by David Jones and Mike Dailly from DMA Design in 1997. Following the release of Grand Theft Auto 3 in 2001, DMA Design was renamed Rockstar North and became part of that label for Take-Two Interactive. The franchise typically revolves around third person shooting and driving around open worlds that are inspired by real world locations like Miami, New York, and Los Angeles. With the release of Grand Theft Auto 5 in 2013, the series has quickly become the fifth best selling video game franchise of all time. from Rockstar Games, but it seems the wait until May 26, 2026, just got a little longer. Grand Theft Auto 6 has once again been delayed to November 19, 2026, over 6 months since its first delay, and as such, frustrated players who have been waiting over 13 years at that point might be looking for some of the best upcoming games in 2026 to pass the time. Luckily, 2026 is pretty stacked for game releases, and we've compiled some that have a lot of charm, potential, and fun to immerse you in open worlds and gameplay loops that'll keep you entertained until you can finally get your hands on GTA 6 on November 19, 2026. While these games might not hit the same spot as GTA 6, they still offer great worlds to explore and addictive gameplay

Rockstar Games Claim Fired GTA 6 Staff Leaked Details As Protests Increase

GTA 6 developer Rockstar Games have released a statement addressing the firings that according one week ago. This came a few hours before a protest took place outside of Take-Two‘s London office (Rockstar’s parent company).

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier received a statement from Rockstar late on Wednesday which accuses the some 30-40 employees of leaking information. The statement is a rebuttal of the reason a union claims for the sackings.

“Last week, we took action against a small number of individuals who were found to be distributing and discussing confidential information in a public forum, a violation of our company policies. This was in no way related to people’s right to join a union or engage in union activities.”

Previously, Take-Two only had said they were fired for “gross misconduct”. Meanwhile the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) claim all of the implicated employees were simply part of a private union Discord chat. Other than those employees, the only others part of the group were “labor organizers” as reported by Bloomberg.

As more details have come to light, fans on social media have expressed anger towards Rockstar Games and Take-Two’s decision. Some people have questioned the validity of such leaking of information given it cannot be found online.

The Protests Will Go On

Early this morning, the IWGB held a protest outside of Take-Two’s London office. This involved dozens of people standing in solidarity with those affected and sacked employees statements being read out aloud. Footage from the protest can be found on the IWGB Instagram account.

Another protest is planned to take place outside Rockstar North’s office later on Thursday. There have been two protests this week outside of the Barclay House building which Rockstar leases which we reported on here. The end goal for the union is to have all of the staff that lost their jobs be given them back.

On Monday, SAG-AFTRA, the large actors union, also joined in supporting the ex-Rockstar staffers. Plus, the UTAW shared a statement backing the affected workers.

Grand Theft Auto 6’s delay was a sad one for fans everywhere, but on the bright side, it does give them something to look forward to in 2026. Also, there are plenty of open-world and sandbox games within the same genre to keep fans busy until May. Some obvious examples include going back to GTA classics or starting up a Saints Row game.

As if the recent delay wasn't already tormenting enough for fans, Google is now recommending a fake Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer to users, courtesy of YouTube channel Teaser Universe. The trailer, titled "Grand Theft Auto VI - Final Trailer (2026) Rockstar Games," is littered with comments from users claiming they had been sent there by Google after receiving a notification that a new trailer had dropped for the game. However, the trailer is not only noticeably fake, but also confirmed to be a fan-made concept trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 by the content creator for the channel.

To say I'm excited is an understatement. I'll never forget the first time I played a GTA title. It was GTA: Vice City, and with GTA 6 bringing the location back into the spotlight, I can only imagine the wave of nostalgia that's going to wash over me. After GTA: Vice City, I quickly became a diehard Rockstar fan, and one of my favorite games from the developer is Red Dead Redemption 2. While a potential third Red Dead Redemption chapter is years away, GTA 6 gives me hope that a new chapter of the western will be Rockstar's next project. However, there is one key detail that makes me worried, and it isn't the fact that GTA 6 was delayed again. My caution comes from the fact that GTA 6 will be missing a major piece of the Rockstar ecosystem: Dan Houser.
