Gary, I replaced 4 collars from them tearing them up...I did everything, I could to keep them from eating the collars...Finally, I gave up and went up to the hardware store...got some Electric fence wire, fence hooks, Hotwire box all for less than $50 came home set it up and have not had a problem with them since...and you can turn it off and on by unplugging it...I wish, I would have did this in the beginning instead of spending all this money on the invisible fence.... My dogs touched the hotwire once...and have never touched it since... Amber

• How do Sarplaninacs handle invisible fences? We live on five acres in the country. Kane usually stays nearby anyways. He doesn't even chase the deer that hang out in the field behind the house - he just sits and watches. I don't usually leave him unattended outside but I would like to start giving him a little more freedom. Do they respect invisible fence? How does their high pain tolerance fit in?
• Tony, Sars and CO have almost identical constitution. I tried the invisible fence with 3 CO and it failed. I did all the right things, watched the video, trained them etc.. took about 3 weeks.. and then one day they just walked through it and sat down in the middle of the hot and tried to scratch the collar off. If alerted or defending - the invisible fence will not contain a Sar or CO. I have one I can send you if you want to try it... don't buy it. Let me know. Gary
• There is hurdly anything that can stop Sarplaninac (or CO) to do what they are think it's right, especialy when defending their teritory. Strong, big metal fence would probably do the job, but even then they will try to dig under the fence or to jump over. But, don't worry, Sarplaninac is not the dog who like to wonder around, in their natural habitation they are set free all their life. Problem could occure when he smels the female that is in heat. • I know that he is not a roamer however I fear that he will possibly go after someone. We don't usually have people walking down our street because it is private and only has 3 houses on it. We live at the end of a cul de sac. If I am there and something catches his attention he makes a run for it but if I am not there he will usually just bark at it. Gary, I may take you up on that offer. It would be nice just to try it out to see if it works.
• Thanks for the offer Gary. I don't know what to do. In order for me to try it I would have to install wire for a couple of acres. Seems like a lot of work, especially, if it doesn't work. How much wire did you install? Did it take long?
• Tony, I covered about 2 acres. just laid the wire on the ground and plugged in the controller module. did not take long at all .. the training of the dog took two weeks but - after he went through it once when defending... it caesed to be a fence. Others may have different experiences with invisible fences but it did not work for me in my situation. Another thing, because of rough play - (Sars and CO do play rough) they would routinely damage the receiver module on the collar and thak got to be expensive replacing them.

• Yep. That is the way to go if you have an existing fence to put the hot wire on! It is the best solution. The invisible fence by itself does not work very well with most Molossers.
• Tony and others, don't waste your time and money on fences and remoters >IT NOT WORKING with this breed.Do the proper training and you will solve yuor problems.I now I am with this breed 25 years and here in NortH America i'll try everthing. They are not stuburn they are THINKNING that is why they are different from the others.
• Most sucess I got with my dogs (CO & CAO) is via e-collars...a pretty penny was spent on them but well worth it...It wasnt because of lack of control I had with my dogs, I wanted a reliable recall which I have now and because I am not walking over a dug up icey yard pulling my dogs in when they flip me the finger while pregnant LOL...When off property the collars are always on but when they are in the yard they come when called instantly with or without the collars on. Great training tool when used properly http://www.gundogsupply.com/dtsyssupspt72.html These are the collars that I got In regards for fencing...I have 6' commercial grade heavy duty chain link...with a top and bottom bar...Bottom bar so they cant dig under and a top bar so they cant push it over and so far no issues...But I dont have 5 acreas fenced Good Luck
• 4iso, Welcome to MD!
They are not stuburn they are THINKNING
 Of course they are. :) Where are you located in North America?
Strong, big metal fence would probably do the job, but even then they will try to dig under the fence or to jump over.
Yep, I have just that, a strong, big rod iron fence....and several holes in the ground that I had to fill again with bricks. DanTX
•
They are not stuburn they are THINKNING that is why they are different from the others.
 Yep! I'll chime in and say that even if your dog isn't a roamer, as mentioned before, because of the size and intensity of these dogs when they go into protection mode trying to rely on an electric collar to stop them is just asking for problems. With some of them even having a physical barrier there isn't always enough. There's also problems with rodents chewing through the wires and the system shorting out. It could be down and you wouldn't ever know it until the dog was already gone and/or you checked the control box. Many dogs like this are smart enough to know and respect the invisible fence... however they will still test it constantly just to see if it is still working. Even if you could assume that your dog respects the invisible fence and doesn't go outside of the area, what will happen when there's another dog that wanders into the yard? I think the best bet is just a phyical barrier plain and simple.
• Well, I can't say for a Sar or CO with invisible fencing, but I had a Chow on 2 Acres with the system. She went through the training and respected her border..... the majority of the time. As Xamen said, we were constantly splicing the wire due to rodent damage. The thing about Grizzly is that she was very smart and would constantly test the parameter. If it went out, she went exploring. Also, if she saw a threat (another dog or human) she had no problem bolting across the threshold to defend her property (once she was across, she wouldn't come back aross the hot zone either). She was only 50 lbs. and I had it on the highest setting. I can't even imagine what a dog with a Sar or CO's stature would do... 8O
• I am a bit confused but I wasnt saying that I rely on my dogs e-collar to control protection mode, they listen to me for that if I am present and they respond, If I am not, then the person is an idiot... but an E-collar is much different than electric fencing...dont knock it till you tried it and I still have commercial grade fencing...a few other people with CAO's & CO's use them as well with great results. My collars are range from 1-50 in regards to strength of a correction along with different varities and both my dogs are on 10 at the moment I have heavy duty collars and paid close to $600 dollars for them and my dogs have an amazing recall now with or without the collars on. They are never outside of their fencing without their collars and leashes on when they are off leash they are in the woods in the middle of no where but hey I have great results with my collars but they would go right though an electric fence I am with my animals pretty much 24/7 so we know each other very well and they know what i will and will not tolerate and respect it because I rule the roose LOL
•
I am with my animals pretty much 24/7 so we know each other very well and they know what i will and will not tolerate and respect it because I rule the roose LOL
THIS is why it works, some people can't always be there when their animals are in the yard. Also, they respect you regardless of the collar or not. It's a tool that when used properly can speed up training techniques. Most dogs I know are more protective of their property when the owner is away (mine sure are). :)
• For Astibus CAO girl and others little advice::::: " have heavy duty collars and paid close to $600 dollars for them and my dogs have an amazing recall now with or without the collars on. " Something is wrong here ! Do you love your dogs ? If you love them than you don't hit them with electric !!! Do you hit your boyfriend or girl friend whom you love with that ?? For another guy Astibus did you ever asked yourself :Why my dog trying to run away of me ??? There must be a reason, They need to feel your back yard like their own and then they won't be running away!
•
Something is wrong here ! Do you love your dogs ? If you love them than you don't hit them with electric !!! Do you hit your boyfriend or girl friend whom you love with that ??
Hmm...I guess all the bird/hunting dogs, their owners dont love either and police dogs, their k9 handlers dont love them either....Let me fill you in....the setting on my collars goes from 1-50, 50 being the highest 'correction' you can give your dog. Both my dogs are on 10 (CO & CAO) and well, i have felt 10 and my husband went all the way up to 50. what you consider a shock is more of a funny strange sensation to the dog that is foreign to them. If the collars hurt the dogs, do you think they would let me put them on? These breeds arent stupid. I find it insulting that you would think that I love my dogs less due to their collars. The other thing...The pain tolerance these breeds have is unreal but these collars arent about hurting the dog and it hurts no more than a leash correction...so please educate yourself before you ask me how much I love my animals. My dogs that I dont love that much
• 4iso, You make a assumptions about people and their dogs. With that said, you must be aware that people who take the time and effort to train their dogs to respect an electric border or signals the dog's compliance with an electronic stimulus - do it because they love their dogs. This love for their dog is manifested in their owners trying to provide a safe environment for them to live and play by establishing some boundaries. Do not assume that you know how best to train someone's dog. All dogs ar not alike nor or all circumstances or application of methods consistent. I will defer to the educated and compassionate ower in almost all cases about what is best for their dog. I have used the electric fence with my dogs. So since use of electric fences and electronic training devices are actually approved by the Humane Society and other organizations - I will assume that with proper use it is actually manifestatioon of love for the animal. They are not cheap and training a dog to respect them takes time so, in my opinion if someone takes the time and effort to do it correctly it is because they do indeed love their dogs. Do not assume to much - it leads to incorrect conclusions.
• 4iso, First of all my comments were made in a humorous way - that's what the "" was supposed to indicate. Nevertheless, my dogs did dig holes. I didn't consider the "reasons" worthwhile sharing, but since it seems you already drew your own conclusions, I will gladly explain. When we take our dogs for a walk through the forest (several times a day), we tend to let them out through the backyard gate. This is easier and less of a mess than through the house. My dogs were so excited sometimes that (especially when they were younger and more inpatient) they tried to get out on their own. They felt a fence couldn't hold them back. In a way, they were trying to get to us and not away from us. Now that they are older and know the routine (and my disliking of digging), this part stopped. They still bark "under" the fence when strangers come too close to the property. My older Shar once crashed through the wooden part of our fence. He didn't try to escape either, but was challenged by another big dog on the outside. We caught him just before any further damage was done. However, this illustrates why I prefer iron fences lately. I hope this additional explanation shows you that my dogs do not tend to escape from our property at all. As I said earlier, initially I didn't consider this explanation necessary as my intentions were merely to support aleksa's statement with a funny comment. Furthermore, I hope that my additional explanation now will help to avoid making premature assumptions about other users in the first place ;-)[blockquote]it leads to incorrect conclusions.[/blockquote] Dito! Dan
• Why so much sensitivity ? I didn't think to insult anybody I just ask simple question : Do you hit your human friend with electric ? About my knowledge J had around two thousend security dogs through my hands for 25 years and more and never used any colars " That stimulate "and I am with Sarplanianc at least 25 years.Beside other experience I was instructor for dog training and consultanat for Army security dogs behavioral problems for a year, That center had around 286 dogs train to protect and attack( People ,wareouses,Country Borders etc.) Half of them were German shepards no "American Breed " and another half Of Sraplaninac ... So I have some clue.. Thank you and if you don't like my commennts don't post it.
• it was the manner in which you asked the question...and maybe I do like to be shocked ;) I dont know...there are some local law enforcement that belong to the same gun club I belong to and they are k9 officiers and well, there dogs have the same collars on... and I have felt the sensation my dog gets and I wouldnt even call it a shock....
• Let me tell you few things. Why you are going with a group? Because K 9 used that doesn't mean that’s good .They don’t want to waste their time with slowly dog’s learning .They want fast and efficient ,no forgetting only in favor of time and money like everything here. No questions about thinking and making decisions, they need robots who will do things on command: Grab- leave !!!That’s it.” No questions asked, team playing.” Dogs didn’t picked us to live with us .We picked them 14.000 years ago and we designed them through History the way we liked .We took a role to create them. But we are not God, we shouldn’t judge but that we are doing it and before and today. We manipulate them on any possible way!!! Unfortunately God create us with possibility to speak and not them .So when introduce your family they don’t have any other choices they can’t meet friends, making friendships, they can not talk like us, they don’t go for a walk without us, we are making decisions for them ,what they going to eat (Dry grinded brick called Dry food ,or table scraps and ect),how many times a day , We train them ,we beat them ,we deciding are they going to have a sex or not we change God creation to neuter them and so many other things bed or good things on our judgment. And who we are ?Busy people with develop individuality in struggle to survive ,loans ,mortgages, stubbing each other in a back. But on the end they are still wolfs same as 14000 years ago same number of chromosomes 78.They still have a same mind that can feel elation ,anger , sadness ,thirst or hunger or exhilaration. Dogs are sentient beings very much aware of their own personalities .They have minds as much as we have .Their brain can store information on two ways .First it stores information concerning the relationship of one event to another ( Like Pavlov’s thing with a bell )and second is called “Instrumental conditioning”( when you teach him to retrieve or something similar) So our creation against God creation ? Conflict of what , you tell me ?That’s why they have on our opinion unpredictable reaction .We don’t now why? Then if we don’t now , have a seat and study or pay somebody to teach you or start to think about what we are doing to make them doing it or what somebody in their blood lines did it before to make them do this things. No force no more human smart ass, get back to start thinking about them like real friends and more of it. I bet you if your life come to danger non of your friends will NOT risk their life to save you except your dogs!!!! I now believe me. Happy studying

• Funny...my dogs are with me 24/7 They are always out and about and they have a life better than most humans and eat better than most humans. No matter what you say about electric collars you dont make me feel bad because I know that I am not hurting my animals in the least. I dont know how familiar with LGD's you really are because if they dont want to work for ya they just plain arent going to regardless of a training method. Argue your points all you want but i know many people that have such amazing relationships with their animals that you all different ways of humane training. You can say whatever you want on the net but that doesnt mean it is true Agree to disagree
• Yes, I need instruction.. please instruct me. I have no idea what I am doing here. Help me please. I didn't think about your site !

Elektricne ograde su apsolutno deplasirani metod. Nemojte ih potcenjavati! Please translate this 4iso. P.S. Za Kavkasce i Azijate ne mogu reci nista, posebno sto se tice modernih varijanti ovih rasa, koji su se prilicno udaljili od autenticnog tipa.
• MONUMENTALS, here's the translation. Hope it's ok to do it instead of 4iso. • In the past, I have used invisible fence and electric fence. My previous dogs got out of both. I think an electric fence used in conjunction with a standard fence is the best method if necessary. I have had dogs that climb or jump the fence and dogs that push under. Bars across the bottom usually mean deeper holes to fill. The dogs can hear the “hum” of the electric fence and know when it is working. I currently have 2 mastiffs in a 5’ chain link fence. I have braided wire across the bottom instead of bars. I have to walk the perimeter about once a week and make repairs. I have considered an electric wire across the bottom to discourage digging under. The most recent escape was through the gate on concrete. The younger mastiff chewed off the wire tying the fence to the frame. I would much rather shock my dog than let him get out in the road and get hit by a car. I would rather cause a little pain/discomfort that have him get poisoned. P.S. My girlfriend routinely uses a Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator or TENS unit on me. I kind of like it.

He always insisted that dogs are thinking reasoning creatures and should be taught as such. I found it hilarious that just a year ago, a scientific study on a border collie "proves" this..
• [blockquote]If you form a proper bond with your dog and train it in basic (reasonable) obedience, then there is no need for the involvment of any type of electric "help", but if for whatever reasons you are unable to handle and control your dog, then I'd suggest working on that first, either via more intense training or by getting help from a professional before resorting to the use of shock collars. Sure, some dogs are just too driven, some are too independent and some are just plain stupid. Just like humans. But not quite as bad... [/blockquote] I am not sure if that was directed toward me but I am going to respond anyways. I have 6' commercial grade fencing that is padlocked with top and bottom bar. Neither one of my dogs have tested my fencing and are quite happy in their yard. Neither one of my dogs would respect and electric fence. My sisters Anatolian and brother weimeraner would go through them fairly often so I never even took installing one as a consideration I do have an amazing bond with my dogs and I with them pretty much all day long. My reason for 'electric collars' is because I needed a 100% perfect recall and about 75% of the time they would listen if I needed them to come inside without the collar training. But if the neighbors intact male rottie.lab mix was out...forget about it...Zero would pretty much flip me off Now being pregnant I am not about to go out in an icey yard to correct him for not listening and I wanted to take him to the ocean and lake to run and play without being on a lead but I needed a 100% consistent recall in order to do that. With the training of a collar...I now have 100% recall...While in the yard, they no longer wear their collars and they just listen when I tell them to come inside...off property and off lead I have their collars on just incase I need to remind them that I did infact give a command and yes, they do need to listen I dont give a command that I cant back up and all my collars are to me is an invisible leash But because I made the decesion to use my collars I 100% doesnt mean that I need the help from a professional trainer....
• Well because you felt that anyone that needs to use an electric help needs a professional trainer...and I do but i dont need a professional trainer and I wanted to clarify :)
