Bavarian Mountain Hound

Developed in the 19th century Germany from the Hanoverian Hound and a variety of small Bavarian hunting dogs, the Bayrischer Gebirgsschweisshund posesses outstanding scenting abilities and prey-drive, making this lively working breed a favourite tracker in southern Germany, Slovakia and Czech Republic, where hunters, foresters and game wardens employ it to follow a cold trail that other hounds failed to locate. It is slowly gaining popularity in Britain, but is still fairly unknown outside the hunting community. The Bavarian Mountain Hound is a strong-boned and deep-chested breed, looking like a smaller version of the Hannoverscher Schweisshund. It makes an agreable companion, but needs a fair amount of training and excercise.

The short coat is thick and flat, coming in red, fawn and brindle shades. Average height is around 20 inches.
