Dogue Brasileiro
This rare Brazilian bully was created in the 1980's by Pedro Dantas who crossed English Bullterriers and German Boxers, although Dogo Argentino and Fila Brasiliero influence has also been suggested, with the Bullterrier remaining the key contributor to the genepool the longest and according to some, to this day. The Dogue Brasileiro wasn't developed for "sport" purposes, but strictly for protection and companion duties, although it does well in sport applications. As a property guardian, it takes its job very seriously, especially during the night. This breed is friendly and playful with people it knows, but cautious around strangers. Even though it isn't a fighting dog, the Brazilian Dogge shows very little tolerance for strange dogs. The appearance type is roughly established, but there is reportedly some inconsistency when it comes to temperament among some specimens. Responsible breeding policy, standardization and popularity will surely become a basis for the breed\'s recognition in the future.
Generally mild-mannered and intelligent, the Dogue Brasileiro makes a wonderful family pet, but its dog-aggression needs to be kept in check through early socialization. Very powerful, energetic and athletic, this breed enjoys an active lifestyle. The head is large, broad and elegant, with a strong muzzle and defined jaws. Compact in build, the Dogue Brasileiro has a wide chest, broad shoulders and a straight back, with a muscular neck and strong legs. The ears are cropped and the tail is left in its natural state.
The short coat is fairly dense and comes in all colours, with white-based, brindle, fawn and tricolour examples being most common. Average height is around 23 inches.
