English Coonhound

The English Coonhound was actually developed in the United States of America in the 17th century, using the popular stock of hounds from Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky, as well as some imported French and British foxhound breeds. A smaller and faster relative of the Black And Tan Coonhound, this rugged working dog has traditionally been used for hunting foxes and racoons in the American south. Although this is primarily a hunting dog in need of active work and exercise, the Redtick Coonhound also makes an amenable family companion, thanks to its reliable temperament and love of children. Good scenting ability and stamina are valued qualities of this hound, as are its powerful body and strong legs.

The coat is short and flat, preferred in the breed's trademark "redtick" spotted markings, but also common in a range of other white-based colours with darker patches. Average height is around 24 inches.
