English Shepherd

Descended from ancient Pannonian Herders, introduced to Britain during the Roman invasion through interbreeding with local watchdogs and sheepdogs, the English Shepherd survived as a common herder, existing in a variety of types for centuries. Alongside other imported Collies and Heelers, the English Shepherd became an immensely popular farm dog in America, where it was finally standardized and established as a breed. Famously versatile, this rugged dog is a capable hunter, livestock herder and protector, as well as a loving and agreable pet.

Agile and energetic, this is a good worker, trainable and loyal to its master. The English Shepherd is an ideal choice for participation in dog sports, such as Agility, Flyball and others. While very friendly and playful with familiar people, this dedicated property guardian can be suspicious and confrontational with strangers and other dogs. Muscular, athletic and resilient, the English Shepherd is generally a healthy breed, although some strains have been known to suffer from hip dysplasia.

The rich coat is hard and dense, most commonly seen in sable shades with white markings, but also found in black-n-tan, tricolour and black-n-white colourings. Average height is around 20 inches.
