Himalayan Bhotia Sheepdog

This ancient Indian livestock guarding and herding breed is related to other Asian Molossers and is believed by some to be the same dog as the Bangara Mastiff, even though the Bhotia is smaller and much lighter. It is a close relative to the more northerly and slightly larger Tibetan Mastiff. The even-tempered Bhotia Sheepdog is slowly gaining acceptance in the West as a loyal family dog and is probably going to enjoy more popularity in the future.

The breed has a reputation for wandering and scavenging when it is not properly controlled, although ths may simply reflect a response to an inadequate diet. Its protective instincts make it a capable watchdog, but the Himalayan Bhotia is not a vicious breed by any means. Well-muscled and quite lean, the Bhotia is agile and fairly athletic

The medium-length coat comes in all shades, solid or multicoloured. Average height is around 23 inches.
