Istrian Rough
The Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound was created in the early decades of the 19th century by crossing the Istrian Short-Haired Hound with the imported French Griffon Vendeen. Retaining the excellent tracking abilities of the popular Istrian Hound, while improving its voice and resilience, the newly established Istrian Rough-Coated Hound breed quickly gained acceptance and became a prized hunting dog in the Balkans. Valued as a tracker and gundog, this tenacious and tireless hound also makes a capable hunter of rabbits, foxes and boars.
The Istrian Rough-Haired Hound was first seen outside its native borders as early as 1866 at a Vienna Dog Show, but to this day it remains more common as a hunting dog instead of a Show dog or a companion pet. Taller and more massive than its smooth-coated relative, the Istrian Coarse-Coated Hound is well-muscled, strongly built and athletic.
The coat is thick, harsh and wiry, always white in colour with orange or fawn markings. Average height is around 23 inches.
