Kerry Beagle

Descended from ancient eastern hounds brought to Ireland by the Celts, the Pocadan was developed in the 1500's as an excellent hunter of hares, foxes and other game. Further crosses with imported French breeds, such as the Talbot Hound, Ariege Pointer and St.Hubert Hound increased size and improved its scenting abilities. Not as numerous as in the past, many Kerry Beagles were introduced to the United States in the 19th century, gaining popularity as all-around hunting dogs, eventually becoming instrumental in the creation of various American hound breeds. The Kerry Beagle is enjoying a resurgence in popularity and has finally been recognized by the Irish Kennel Club. Once again employed for its original duties, the breed is becoming a regular contestant in drag trials as well. Friendly, trainable and playful, it makes a good family companion.

The coat is short, flat and dense, coming in a wide variety of colours. Average height is around 23 inches.
