Plott Hound

One of the most resilient American hunting dogs, the Plott Hound was developed from old German bloodhounds and gundogs, such as the Hanoverian Hound, brought to North Carolina by Johannes Georg Plott in the 1750s. Some early influx of American Boarhound and Southern Bulldogge blood has been suggested, but for over 200 years after establishing type, the Plott Hound has consistently been bred to strictly set standards by the Plott family and is today one of the instantly recognizable American breeds. Used to hunt racoons and bears in the Blue Ridge, Appalachian and Smoky mountains of its native land, the mighty Plott Hound is a tenacious and athletic breed, known for its awe-inspiring endurance and drive. Its bright and loud bark sets it apart from low howls of typical American bloodhounds and coonhounds, as does the sheer agility of this lively gundog.

Deep-chested, lean and muscular, the Plott Hound is quite powerful and some specimens can be very stubborn, needing early training and firm handling. With proper socialization, it can make a good companion pet, although it needs plenty of excercise and is the happiest when working.

The flat coat is short, thick and glossy, coming in either blue or black brindle colourings, some with a black "saddle" and with small white markings accepted on the chest and feet. Average height is around 23 inches.
