Spanish Water Dog

The Spanish Water Dog was developed from various bearded shepherds, water dogs and hounds of Europe in the Middle Ages. Used as a sheepdog, goat herder, cattle control dog, fisherman's companion and duck retriever, this is truly one of the most versatile breeds in the world. The Perro de Agua is more common in the south of Spain than in the northern parts of the country and is still very rare outside its borders.

This breed makes a good companion, but can easily be provoked by other dogs and gets irritated by children and strangers, needing very early and broad socialization.

The coat is curly, wooly and waterproof, common in white, black, chestnut and various bicolours. Average height is around 19 inches.
