Tyrolean Hound

Many believe that this Austrian breed is directly descended from the ancient Celtic Hound, while others link its heritage with the hunting dogs of the Balkans, such as the Yugoslavian Mountain Hound and the Hellenikos Ichnilatis. Related to the Austrian Black And Tan Hound, the rugged Tiroler Bracke is a tenacious, dedicated hunter of foxes, hares, rabbits and other small game. Being the favourite small hunting breed of Emperor Maximilian the First, the Tyrolean Hound became prized in its native land and from the 1500's until the 18th century a few major bloodlines were established, resulting in official recognition in 1908. This hound is a superbly resilient and driven hunter, well-suited for work in the rough mountain terrains of Austria.

Easy to train and playful with its owners, the Tyrolean Hound can be overly protective and somewhat unfriendly towards other dogs if not socialized properly. Strongly built and deep-chested, this is an athletic and healthy dog. The legs are well-muscled and sturdy. The head is fairly broad with a powerful nose and long ears.

The coat is dense and hard, most commonly black-n-tan in colour, but also found in solid red shades, as well as tricolours. Average height is around 19 inches.
