Keep your dog cool in hot weather

Here are some tips to keep your dog cool in hot weather:

  • Make sure your dog has access to clean, fresh water at all times, ideally in a large bowl filled to the brim. You can also add ice cubes to keep water cold.
  • Limit exercise to early morning when temperatures are lower.
  • Keep your dog indoors during the hottest part of the day. If you have an outdoor space for the dog provide cooling or appropriate forced ventilation.
  • Provide shade for your dog when outside.
  • Use a cooling mat or wet towel for your dog to lie on.
  • Use a battery-operated fan or cooling vest to help keep your dog cool when outside.
  • Avoid hot pavement or sand as it can burn your dog’s paws.
  • Never leave your dog in a parked car.
  • Provide a play pool that the dog can get into to cool down in the shade.

These are just some of the ways you can help keep your dog cool in hot weather.

I hope this helps!

    • All good information here. I recall not knowing how hot the pavement was to my dogs. It was a hot day. I took my dog for a walk. He was supposed to sit. But he was hesitant. Then when we got near to some grass he broke command to get off of the hot sidewalk. That's when I realized the sidewalk was too hot. He wasn't being stubborn. He was avoiding sitting down and other things because of the hot ground. After that experience I walked my dog late at night. The pavement would be cooler then. Even my little Patterdales when at a dog trial they are ready to go. But as soon as we get done with an event. They will go under the truck to get cool. If the trials are outside I walked them in the grass whenever possible.

Tomorrow I'm taking them dock diving. I'm bringing my portable clip on fans to keep them cool on the way back from the pool.
