Memorial Day 2024

In the United States of America we pause on Memorial Day to honor our fallen sailors, soldiers, airmen, Marines, and Coast Guard.

Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. It's a day of reflection, gratitude, and family gatherings, where we pay homage to the courageous men and women who laid down their lives for the freedoms we cherish. As we enjoy the company of our loved ones, let's take a moment to acknowledge the bravery and selflessness of our fallen heroes, whose legacy continues to inspire us. Let this day be a reminder of the cost of peace and liberty, and let us carry their memory in our hearts always.

Some similar days in other countries that serve the same purpose as Memorial Day in the United States:

  • United Kingdom: The UK observes Remembrance Sunday on the Sunday nearest to November 11, the day Germany signed the armistice ending World War I.
  • South Korea: South Koreans observe Memorial Day on June 6, the same month that the Korean War began.
  • France: Armistice Day in France is observed on Nov. 11 with ceremonies, special church services and poppy adornments.
  • New Zealand and Australia: Anzac Day on April 25 commemorates New Zealand and Australia’s servicemen and women who have died.
  • Turkey: Turkey observes Martyrs’ Day on March 18, the anniversary of a major victory against the Allied Powers during the Gallipoli Campaign.
  • Nigeria: Nigeria formerly observed Armed Forces Remembrance Day on Nov. 11.
  • Russia: In Russia, May 9 is Victory Day, which commemorates the surrender of Nazi Germany to the Allies in World War II.
  • Israel: On the 4th of the Hebrew month of Iyar, Israel celebrates Yom Hazikaron, or "Memorial Day".
  • Netherlands: The Netherlands celebrates Dodenherdenking, Dutch for “Remembrance Day,” on May 4.
  • Germany: Germany celebrates Volkstrauertag, “Memorial Day” in German, on the Sunday closest to November 16.

These days are dedicated to remembering and honoring those who have died in service to their country, similar to Memorial Day in the United States.
