If you dont have the time or the means to let a dog run atleast two miles a day then you shouldnt own a dog. Any breed that cant easily run two miles isnt much of a dog and you should look into getting yourself one of them. This isnt from personal experience but I've read that bull mastiffs are generally very short lived and plagued with poor health. So much so that one person who loved the breed dearly said they'd never have another because they couldnt stand the heartache that came with them. An American bulldog will die for its family without hesitation but need exercise to remain mentally and physically healthy. Two miles a day would be a minimum and they'd do better with ten at their own pace. For a look at what an American bulldog or Pitbull should be if bred properly then do a web search for Southern Bulldogs. I'm not affiliated with the this kennel in any way shape or form.

    • I know that both these dogs are excellent guardians. What I like to know whose of these two breeds is more calm and gentle towards children and other dogs. I really doesn't need an athletic dog, cause i dont't have so much time for their exercise. What i would like is a hardy and healthy dog that protects and as the same time would be full of love for the permissible people (friends). If there is other breeds you could mention them.
      • I would say the American Bulldog is the superior protector and working dog over all. The Bullmastiff has been watered down and truly breed for the show ring. When it comes to American Bulldogs, you will find several strains. I would first say research the varying strains of American Bulldogs, performance ( scott ), Johnson, Painter, Screaming Eagle, Hines, and of the Hybrid Bulldogs which consist of crossing several strains together. The Bullmastiff at one point was a great working dog, they are currently plagued with hip and elbow problems and watered down temperments. The biggest key to owning any working dog is to Control ( ob ) and excercise, and proper socialization. You will have a big part in the way the dog intercacts with people.

          • Strange, how whenever the name Bullmastiff comes up, there are quick responses that seem to somehow put out the fire before it has even started. With all respect, Vinay(bullmol242), I totally understand what you are saying, I respect you as a breeder, and have always commended you and still do to this day. What you say is very true , that the Bullmastiff has been 'watered down', but, I firmly believe from my own experience, that there are truly outstanding specimens, who will guard and protect in many different situations, while still very young, and above all, with no formal training. From what I have learned from Bullmastiff owners from the the US, is that they have far less drive, than the Bullmastiffs in the UK. I think, personally, that whenever, such a question is posed, people will take it personal and try and promote their dog of their country. I am speaking from experience, and can honestly say, in reply to Cornelio, the Bullmastiff is a great guard dog, fantastic with children and babies, other pets, if introduced when young, and require basic exercise. With regards to life expectancy, it all depends on genetics and how well you take care of your dog. I got to meet my dogs grandparents, parents before we bought our Bullmastiff, and they are still alive and well. I really think generalization is a bad thing, just look at the AMERICAN PIT BULLTERRIER, so many bad things said about it, and its a great breed of dog. There are bad lines out there, and there are good ones. I think this can be argued about a lot of Bully breeds. This is just my opnion from experience.

              • Thanks for the replies and the info. I started to find american bulldogs breeders in puerto rico, cause i think that the american bulldog is the more appropiate to the warm climate of pr. I have been searching and the bullmastiff here in pr cost around $1,500 to 2,000. that is a lot of money. The other dog that i like was the dogue de bordeaux, but didn't like the ones that i saw here, they were from show lines and their life expectancy was 4-5 years. Other recomendations were the dogo argentino and the rhodesian ridgeback, but need a hell lot of space and were too drivey. And the presa canario, but too much of a temperament and the owner of ten here in pr was attacked by one, and went to hospital 3 months. When a presa attack, it is very difficult to stop them. Beautiful dogs , but for persons with lot of space. The other day i was reading a book titled k-9 bodyguards, the man that write it lives in florida, a very similar climate to puerto rico. He recommended the american bulldog, maybe because is an american and affordable breed, but also the breed is very healthy and intelligent and secure. So i think that a well bred american bulldog is a good solution. I don't know too much about the lines, cause every dog that i see is from johnson lines, so if someone can give me more info about the strains, welcome.
                • I am a newbie with my American Bulldog, who I do have the pleasure of sharing his life with my family for over one year. First of I do not run 2 miles a week with my dog. I should for the reason I need to drop weight and not because he is hyper. When I first got him we walked for an hour 3 times a week in the evenings, but since he turned 2 we haven't done that much walking. I do have over an acre of land where he does run around several times a day. He is not a outside dog. He loves to be with us. You will need to do OB training with this breed. They bond very well with their family members and their friends. Spike evens has accepted the family cat and the other two dogs we have. American Bulldogs are active and may have a high prey drive depending upon their breeding. I am still learning about this breed. I do love ABs
                  • Whenever bullmastiffs are mentioned they cop a lot of crap, and I'm sre there's truth to it, I understand the watering down of show breeds and etc, but then I also have real life experience with bullmastiffs and the ones I came across were anything but watered down. If they had a "weakness" from my perspective it would be that they seemed too intense. Relatives of mine have had them and they seem to be the kind of dog that's always trying to climb fences to kill cats and the males are really macho trying to fight other dogs all the time. And these are real negative attributes from my perspective, not what I want in a dog, but it's just that it's the complete opposite of the "watered down" image they are always portrayed as. They're supposedly lazy with depleted drives and unfit, the ones I've known were too energetic, with drives that were too intense for the people who owned them, and they were also in really great shape and quite physically capable, able to run very fast and jump fences they weren't supposed to. I know more bullmastiffs that were given away and even put to sleep for being too much dog than any other breed. For doing things like climbing next door and killing the neighbours cat under their house, breaking through the fence and chasing the mail man, injuring other people's dogs etc, real problematic behaviour and I'm not saying it's good, all I'm saying is it doesn't fit the description of the watered down lazy lump of a soft dog bullmastiffs are supposed to be.
                    • I guess I am spoiled from being around working AB's. Because I would never call an AB a dog that was friendly and permissible with strangers or other animals and would never classify them as low enough in drive for the normal suburbanite or city dweller. And as far as country bred AB's go, Ive never heard of one that will tolerate same sex dogs. From my experience they will tolerate strangers when the owners are around but they don't care for them and are easy to set off. And they are normally zero tolerant of free roaming males. And have full blown hella-drive. And are much better mannered and managed when they are tired out from work or play as any dog is. So once more, ask the breeder of your choice questions about his line and common disposition and temperaments. I have met one scatter-bred AB that was a really friendly out going dog with strangers, in my mind very un-AB like, but thats because Im hooked on a certain line of AB's and I am biased. Each person here will have their own personal opinions of what makes a good dog or certain breed, best thing is don't mistake AB's as low drive and Labbish in temperament, most are not, and thankfully they haven't been recognized and destroyed as a show breed...yet. Once more ask questions of the breeders you are looking at about their line of AB, you could end up getting a dog you can't handle. Good Luck!!!!
                      • well, considering there is a great deal of each breed in the other, your pretty much just depending on the ratio of ab to bm as far as type, temp, body, health etc etc etc
