The rope tug is the most commonly used and offers very good durability and bite. I wonder how you could get your dog more interested in it.  Probably the idea is to make it a really fun game and reward him when he takes the bite.  Did you use one of his rope tugs on the pole or a brand new one?

I understand fully your thoughts on the owners needing to train themselves and be prepared for the responsibility of owning large powerful dogs. Sometimes the best trained dogs will behave badly but training and socialization can mitigate the trigger.
