Shirak Sheepdog
This rare Iranian dog is related to other breeds of the region. The Shirak is a rugged and resilient working dog, traditionaly used as a flock guardian and herder. Nicknamed the "Little Lion", this is a richly coated breed, well suited for harsh climates of its homeland. Unlike some of its Molosser cousins, the Shirak Sheepdog is primarily a herding dog, constantly moving and driving livestock. It will, however, confront and chase away potential predators if needed.
Well-boned, muscular and powerful, but quite lean and agile, the Kurdestan Shirak is a tireless worker and a capable hunter. Suspicious of strangers and extremely territorial, it makes a reliable guard dog. Early socialization and proper handling is needed, due to this Molosser's sharp temperament and confrontational nature.
Its thick flat coat is most valued in lion-yellow, golden and brindle colours, but other shades exist.
The average height is around 24 inches.
