A close relative of the Swiss Appenzeller, Entlebucher and Bernese Mountain Dogs, as well as the German Rottweiler, the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is believed to be the oldest Swiss breed, descended from ancient Alpine dogs and those brought by the Romans over 2000 years ago. Often viewed as a short-haired Bernese, this breed was saved from extinction, alongside the rest of the Swiss dogs, by Albert Heim and Franz Schertenlieb in the early 20th century.

A reliable cattle-herder, property guardian and cart-pulling dog for centuries, this energetic breed makes a lovely companion, altough it's not as popular as the Bernese Mountain Dog. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is a loyal family dog, fond of children, but not very tolerant of other dogs. Large, heavy, well-muscled and broad-chested, it makes an intimidating watchdog.

Coat is medium short, thick and flat. This is always a tricoloured breed, consisting of black, tan and white. Average height is around 28 inches.
