[htmlThis old working breed was developed from bearded shepherds, spaniels and Poodles in the 1400's in the Ravenna and Comacchio regions of Romagna in northern Italy, near the Swiss border. An excellent swimmer and retriever, the Lagotto Romagnolo's job changed drastically after the marshlands were drained to create much needed arable land. This versatile hunter became an impressive truffle dog, a role it maintains to this day. Energetic, smart and playful, the Romagna Water Dog makes a good pet, but can be dog-aggressive if not socialized properly. It is slowly gaining popularity outside Italy, both as a worker and a show dog.

The wooly coat is dense and curly, coming in creamy shades of white, fawn, red, brown and in various bicolours. Average height is around 18 inches.
