History
This highly regarded sporting dog was perfected in Germany by a Dutchman, Edward Korthals, between 1865 and 1885. It was first known as the Korthals Griffon for this reason.
The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1936.
General Appearance and Characteristics
Everything about the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon indicates strength and vigor. He has a very intelligent air. His characteristic coat is harsh like the bristles of a wild boar. His appearance, even with the short coat, is as unkempt as that of the long-haired Griffon. He has a biddable, affectionate nature, which makes him suitable for a family pet as well as his original purpose of a hunting dog.
Head and Skull
The long head is furnished with a harsh coat, forming a mustache and eyebrows. The skull is long and narrow. The muzzle is square.
EYES - The large, open eyes are full of expression. They are yellow or light brown in color.
NOSE - The nose is always brown.
EARS - The medium size ears are flat or sometimes slightly curled. They are set rather high and very lightly furnished with hair.
Neck
The neck is long and clean, with no dewlap.
Forequarters
Strongly limbed. The shoulders are long and sloping.
FORELEGS - The very straight, muscular forelegs are furnished with rather short wire hair.
Body
Fairly short backed. Rather a little low on its legs. The ribs are slightly rounded.
Hindquarters
Strongly limbed.
HIND LEGS - The hind legs are furnished with rather short, stiff hair. The thighs are long and well developed.
Feet
The round feet are firm and well formed.
Tail
The tail is generally docked to a third of its full length. It is carried straight or gaily. Furnished with a hard coat, but without plume.
Coat
The outer coat is hard, dry and stiff. The undercoat is downy.
Disqualification: Curly outer coat.
Color
Acceptable colors include: steel gray with chestnut splashes; gray white with chestnut splashes; chestnut; dirty white mixed with chestnut.
Disqualifications: Black. Albinism.
Height
Height range for males is 21½ to 23½ inches. Height range for females is 19½ to 21½ inches.
Disqualifications
Unilateral or bilateral cryptorchid. Viciousness or extreme shyness. Black dogs. Albinism. Curly outer coat.
