Best training method?

The best training method is the one that works with your dog. Ceasar Milan is a glorified koehler trainer. That will NOT work on an akita. Akita is a dog you have to reach an understanding with, you have to earn their love and respect, and when you do you will also earn a level of willingness to please. You will not reach that with koehler type training.

      Recently I´ve been wanting to get more involved with training my 1 year old female akita. She´s well behaved most of the time but she still does a few things that I want to change. My main issues with her are that I can´t have her off leash cause she bolts, she doesn´t always listen when I give her commands, things like that. All the training I´ve done with her I´ve done on my own reading tutorials on the internet or in books. Now I´m trying to make her more obedient since she´s getting big and I don´t want to make her to become a liability. I´ve downloaded some training dvd´s, but some seem to contradict each other and don´t really go in-depth as far as methods of corrections/rewards, commands, etc. The dvd´s I have are from Cesar Millan, Don Sullivan, and Leerburg. I really don´t know who has the best training methods, in some things they seem to contradict each other and I´m trying to figure out the best approach. I would like you guys to give me your opinions on these 3 methods, and if you have any suggestions of other dvd´s I should check out I would like you to tell me which ones they are. Thanks!

          Thanks for the reply. Do you have any suggestions as far as a specific training methods? I honestly thought training methods were not breed specific, but if I'm wrong I would like to be corrected. You mentioned that I have to reach an understanding with my dog, how would you accomplish that? If anyone else has a suggestion please post it. looking forward to it. Thanks!
          • Each dog is an individual, methods that work for one may not work for another. Generally speaking though, each given popular training method will work for most dogs. I'm pretty gentle with my Tosas, because they're very sensitive to me. For training off leash though, i've used an electric collar sparingly to correct bad behaviour. Such as taking off to visit the neighbours and not coming back to me when called. :( You may want to find a training club or a good private trainer and they can help you figure out how to motivate her.
            • First and Foremost the Dog needs to be tired BEFORE you EVER try to do any off leash training. Next I would purchase yourself a long lead (12' plus) Not a retractable leash, but an actual long line. Get yourself a bag of chicken, hot dogs-Whatever the dog likes that is Stinky) Take dog out to park, woods where-ever. Let the dog sniff around and call it back, when it comes back praise the dog and give it food. Do this 100+ times-You'll have the dog trained that coming to you means Happy yummy food. Start this training somewhere quiet with little distractions, and slowely move it to where other people, and/or dogs are at. This works with 90% of dogs. What-ever training you use will not work Unless you practise and only use one type, the more time you put into it...The better the dog will do! But finding a good trainer/club....Well there is Nothing better that you could do for YOU or YOUR dog imo.

                Thanks Babigirl. I´ve looked around here for trainers and training classes but most don´t seem to be quite what I´m looking for. The ones that Ive been able to get information from are ones that just use hard punishments for dogs when they don´t obey. They just scare the dog in to doing what they want. People here where I live (Guatemala) are not really educated as far as dog training that´s why I wanted to take this up on my own. What I´m looking for is something that shows you step by step how to do it, not just something general like the videos I have.
                • I'm sorry to hear that... Here's my advice for you, everything you do with a dog keep it simple, short sessions and fun, use food only when they do exactly what you want, lots of praise and if you can give the dog 15 minutes of training a day, use the Same words for What you are training....And Atleast one good walk a day you'll have an awesome dog in another year. I will only use force as a punishment If its the fastest and best way to get my point across. But generally I use noise corrections and if your dog likes to chase a ball use it to your advantage-For exercise and training. An Akita is a smart dog so you have to work its body as well as its mind, at a year it is Not a mature dog..Let it meet lots of new people-Children included. You may notice in another year or so you're dog is Not as friendly...So this is the time To get in As much socialization as possible...Good luck in you quest...This is a great site to find it. =O)
