Catahoula Bulldog?
yeah a lot of various specialised working strains of dogs have *been around* for long periods of time but thats not the same thing as a recognised breed with a set type, set temperement, official lineage records and a standard older than a minute. the cata bullies are great workers, all of em, theres all kinds of subcategories and offshoot types differentiated from one another by the amount of and actual type of pit, ambull, bt, amstaff, blackmouth cur or whatever else used in making a cata bulldog or a cata pit and on top of that none of it matters to people who use these dogs whats in them or how they look or even act outside of catch work, so thats not a *breed* being around for a 100 years, thats a type or a popular cross being around for a long time by the act of the crosses being repeated, not by any type of blood lineage or actual continuation of the stock that existed 100 yrs ago.
just addressing a part of your post, not bashing these dogs
theres a growing number of *breeders* so buyer beware
some really cool cata bulls out there and im sure you can find a sweet one
not sure how cool would they be with your jrt

This breed is apparently hard to find, but it seems to have the qualities we're looking for. If we got a male pup, it seems like it would okay with the JRT. Are they really that hard to find, or is it just that finding a properly bred one is difficult? There seem to be plenty of breeders on the internet. Of course, there's no way to know how ethical they are. Would we be more likely to get a good one in LA or the South? The profile says they've been around for about 100 years, so it seems like there could be good breeders anywhere. Any additional info and opinions on this breed are appreciated. -

What you just explained also explains or adds to my understanding of what I've read about quite a few other dogs. It's starting to make sense. I went to the baydog site linked above and read all the Q & A and most of the rest of the site. I'm thinking this isn't going to be the right dog. Thank you, and thanks to jaboa for the link. -

My wife and I just recently (2 months ago) purchased a 62.5% boerboel, 12.5% kangal, 12.5% dogo argenino, 12.5% great Dane from Andrew Johnston of olympicdogs.net. He is currently 5 months old and 75 lbs as of yesterday before breakfast. He is best of friends with our 10 pound terrier and loves kids. Just wondering if there are any other owners of a...

Interesting photos. How does the Bullmastiff perform in the Brazilian heat? I have friends in Recife where it's 80s year round and very few Molossers survive there. I do know that some Brazilian Police like the Tropa de Elite take pride in their working Filas that look like giant bloodhounds that are used to hunt and sometimes kill fugitives in the jungle.
